There are a lot of things to look forward to when coming home from college. Whether it be just for the weekend, the holidays, or for the summer, there is an irreplaceable feeling in the pit of your stomach; you know what I am talking about.
All the friends you get to see, and the family that hasn’t talked to you in months. But in that family, there is a certain group that falls into a special type of category: your grandparents.
This article's purpose is to serve as a thank you letter of sorts to those people. Those grandparents that, no matter what you do, will be the backbone of your family. Here are five things we could not do without you, and for that, we thank you.
1. Thank you for listening, even though you might not have a clue what I am talking about.
So maybe those weekly phone calls turn into weekly rant sessions, but for some reason, you keep listening to us. For some reason you choose to pretend like you don't know why our calculus professor didn’t just round our grade up, even though it clearly says on the syllabus he doesn’t do that. Your endless listening skills don’t go unnoticed, and for that, we college students are forever grateful.
2. Thank you for telling me I can do it, even though you and I both know it is a stretch.
You give us the encouragement to be super-humans because you know everything will fall into place. You know we can’t do it all, but you keep encouraging us to do so, because it is things like this that we have to learn on our own. Somehow, those encouraging words keep us going, no matter how many exams, work shifts, and outside functions we are required to attend this week that might be bogging us down.
3. Thank you for always making sure my stomach is full.
The freshman 15 doesn’t happen when you go to college, it happens when you come home for Thanksgiving and your grandparents are convinced you haven’t eaten since you left. But really, thanks for making sure I don’t go hungry at home, at school, or anytime in between. Thanks for taking us to lunch every now and then too; cooking and cafeteria food get old pretty fast.
4. Thank you for the endless advice.
Whether warranted or not, the advice never stops flowing. It’s not always our favorite, because we think, in our 20-something-year-old minds, that we have it all figured out, but we don’t. Not even close. That being said, you are a lot closer to having it figured out than us, so thanks for at least trying to always help. Along with the endless support, the advice is something we are appreciative of, whether we admit it or not.
5. Thank you for being the backbone to our family.
Whatever happens, you are always there. No matter the problem, or whose problem it is, you live up to the challenge that is presented. Your strength impresses us all, and for that, we thank you immensely.
