First off, yes I'm a freshman. No I don't have all the answers, these are just a couple tips I wish I would have listened to. So, in case you haven't heard them a thousand times, here they are again with the point of view of a freshman behind them.
1. Get out of your room.
Yes, I know it’s scary and you like your bed and Netflix. But there is a whole other world out there and you need to go explore it. Even if it’s just a nightly run to Starbucks to work on homework and drink coffee. If it gets you out of your dorm room and doing something, try it!
2. Join that club.
Trust me, I know people are intimidating, but joining a club will help you a lot more than you know. Not only will you meet new people and have an extracurricular on your resume, but it gives you something to do instead of laying around all afternoon.
3. Get a job.
Believe me, life as a college freshman is rough, but looking for a job or even working on campus can help you gain social and business skills that will help you later in life. You don’t even have to get a job right away. Heck I waited until halfway through my first semester before I even started looking, but since you probably live in a college town, most businesses look year round for an employee.
4. Explore the town.
Take a road trip, bring some friends, or even by yourself. It’s go to know your way around the town, especially when your parents come to visit. You also might just find the perfect coffee shop/study spot at the quiet corner cafe.
5. Talk to people.
When you go to class the first day, you won’t know anyone there, but that’s the perfect time to make friends. Even if you are unsure of yourself act confident, they won’t know. Friends make college a lot easier to deal with.
6. Breathe.
Oh yeah, I have those same jitters. College heightens all emotions and makes us really really worried, but you have nothing to be worried about. You will be fine. So take a deep breath, think positive thoughts, and go show the world what you are made of.
