An Open Letter To My Freshman Year Roommate

You will always be my roomie, whether we are together or apart.

An Open Letter To My Freshman Year Roommate
Robin MacKellar

Hey Roomie,

I can't believe that next year you won't be my roomie anymore. Of course, you will always be my freshman roommate and my first friend on campus. But still, it will be different. Freshman year was a huge adjustment for us both. Moving away from home, discovering who we are outside of our towns, beginning the paths to our careers, and throughout it all, you were my strongest support system.

I remember our first conversation. It was only a few weeks before move-in day, and at that time we were 10 hours apart. I am pretty sure it had something to do with logistics for our room, but mostly we talked about how excited we were for college. Getting to know you and discovering how compatible we were as roommates (and friends) was making the transition to college a little less scary.

Move-in day was the best day, ever. We were college students now, we got student IDs, met other students from all over, and set up our home for the next 9 months.

Walking into our room, I will never forget how scared I was of our bathroom and how I was never going to shower in it. (Except we both know, that it will probably be one of the things we miss the most about our room next year.) That day was truly the beginning of one of the best years of my life.

Our times together will always make me laugh. We are the definition of struggle when we are together. Whether it's sitting outside watching the moon for my astronomy class, singing and dancing in the rain for the fun of it, watching your utterly disgusting brain surgeries, or singing "High School Musical" duets with our hair brushes -- it was never a dull moment when we were together.

One thing's for certain, I will never forget the numerous times we took turns lying on the floor and explaining why our lives are falling apart to each other, and that's something I hope will continue in the future.

Thank you for teaching me what it's like to live with another person, I mean growing up as an only child, I was slightly nervous about having a roommate. How could I share a bathroom with another person, was something I couldn't comprehend before moving in.

However, how could you adjust to leaving your siblings behind, and getting used to having less noise around. For me, I went from having no one to talk to when I was alone, to having my best friend always there to listen.

I can't begin to imagine what it is going to be like when I move out, so much so, I try not to think about it. You have become one of my closest friends, and even after a year of living with me, I think we are closer now more than ever. I don't want to say goodbye, I don't think it's possible.

Next year moving into another room and not having you there is something I don't think I can do. However, one thing I know for sure is that I could have never asked for a better roommate, friend, or sister.

So here's to you, my freshman roommate, you have been a major part of my college experience. You will be the one that fills my college stories when I reminisce in the future. The one I can't wait to see at reunions every couple of years.

You are the one that I will always say was my first friend at college. Having you as a friend is both an honor and something that I will never be able to repay you for. Thanks for being you and for the opportunity to be your roommate.

Love you always,
Your freshman roomie.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
