Let me start this by saying I am truly sick and tired of seeing people attack one another. I'm tired of people judging one another based solely off of political or religious beliefs. I'm tired of the racism, homophobia, sexism, xenophobia, etc.
In the past year, I've been called a feminazi, a dirty liberal and more. More than I have in my entire life. I know for a fact that others have faced much worse simply because of their political views.
America has suffered a great divide. Now, we are defined as Republicans or Democrats. We are pro-Trump or pro-Clinton. Honestly, I'm not sure if America has ever been so divided. People are attacking one another in the streets, disintegrating friendships, screaming hateful things and much worse simply because of the presidential election. It truly sickens me.
I can't imagine how someone could ever judge another human being solely based on who he or she is voting for. We are not defined by our political parties, our gender, our race, our sexuality or even our religion or lack thereof. We are defined by the fact that we are all human, we are all American, and we are all entitled to our own opinions. Because of this, we ought to treat one another equally and with respect.
Joseph Clay, a friend of mine, posted on Facebook a few days ago, "Do not confuse who I am with my political or religious views. I'm much more than a label."
I think that is a very important and topical statement. There's so much more to all of us than who we're voting for. There's so much more to us than what we believe, who we love, or our outward appearance.
Please hear me when I say that it is time to stop. It's time to stop attacking people because of who they're voting for. It's time to respect one another's opinions. It's time to agree to disagree.
The next time you want to stereotype or generalize or judge someone based on something that doesn't define them, please reconsider. Wrap your head around the fact that all Trump supporters aren't racist. Remember that all Clinton supporters aren't voting for her just because she's a woman.
Don't make angry Facebook posts that group individuals and attack them all because of the actions of one. Don't hate someone because of who they're voting for. Don't use violence as an outlet for your anger. Don't perpetuate the stereotyping of individuals.
Instead, let's bridge the divide in America. Love one another. Respect one another. Be kind. Be understanding.
Remember that I am not who I'm voting for. None of us are.
