As classes are coming to an end and finals are around the corner, it’s easy to check out mentally. However, beware of checking out just yet. These last two weeks could make it or break it for some.
As we wind down professors are going to be more flexible now because they see where the grades are headed. Most will offer you extra credit If they feel the class could benefit from it. If you go to your professors and ask for an extra credit opportunity, more often than not, they will allow it. Don’t be afraid to go to your professor and ask for an opportunity to better your grade. While you’re there ask them for some study tips for their finals. Professors are more willing to help if you show that you are trying. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, the professor will tell you what is going to be on the final. This goes for year round tests as well. If you are ever struggling In a class your best resource is your professor. Only they know how they make their tests and what material will be on it ahead of time. If you need help, go to them, they’ll appreciate your effort and usually be easier on your grades.
Remember not to let the stress of the last few weeks get to you. It’s easy to let stress consume you and feel like you cannot get enough things done. Find ways to help remain calm and de-stress, whether that be painting, running, watching television, etc. Do whatever works best for you. Take time away from studying to relax, you never want to over-do it. If your face is glued to your book for 5 hours straight, odds are that you won’t retain the majority of the information you are trying to learn. Alternate between studying, homework and taking a break. Set up a limit for how long you will do each activity. You may study for one hour and then watch your favorite television show for 30 minutes. Find the timing that works best for you to stay relaxed but still be productive.
There may be stuff going on campus to keep your spirits up. Don’t be afraid to put down your book for an hour and go to the events. Some colleges will do relaxation weeks around finals time. These events are usually aimed to de-stress you by massages, painting, and hanging out with friends, among other things. There are also celebrations for holidays in the fall semester. Take advantage of the fun (and usually free food).
Lastly, as tempting as it is to skip classes these last few weeks, don’t do it! These are the weeks that some professors make presentations, papers, etc. due. You don’t want to miss a due date or lose points for not showing up. They may do review sessions in these last few weeks. Although some professors finish their material early, they will still have you come to class to review material from the beginning of the semester. Professors realize that you’ve been working hard all semester and want to see you succeed. If you go to class, the professor may award extra credit just for showing up. They may even give you hints or tell you what will be on your test.
If your professor cancels class, then congratulations! I suggest that you attend your last few weeks though. I mean, you’ve already made it this far. Good Luck and may the odds be ever in your favor!
