For college students, the Fall semester goes something like this. August and September are the times when you first meet your professors and have limited assignments. October is midterm season, so say goodbye to studying and hello to Netflix! Also, the last week of October consists of figuring out how to look your best for Hallo-weekend. Now, November is when every professor decides they are going to have all final papers and projects due this month and if you are lucky, some professors even decide to have everything due during the same week! Also, November is focused on every college students favorite, food! November is the teaser month. You get to go home, see all your friends and family, and celebrate Thanksgiving; however, if you don't go home and celebrate Thanksgiving, you at least get to a break to brace yourself for December. And speaking of it, December is the month where you get to really test your sleeping skills. December is known as the month of no-sleep for college students and it's when your entire schools population lives in the library.
But back to November, the time of the semester when you have everything and anything due. If you have any luck like me, your professors choose to sit in a circle and say lets plan to make everything due this week. Sometimes it is just by chance and other times it is because a majority of your classes are in the same department and they run on practically the same schedule. So here are some tips to help you get through all of November stress free and make it to Thanksgiving Break!
1. Remember to BREATHE.
Yes, breathing is an important part of life. However, breathing is important to do when you are stressed out and overwhelmed. Sometimes a few deep breathes is all you need to take to clear your head of all the jumbled thoughts and focus on the task at hand.
2. Make a list.
What I like to do is to make a list of everything I need to do and write when its due. I then re-write everything again in chronological order. Yes, it is a lot of writing, but it helps you put it into perspective and makes things look more manageable. When making the second list, you can write each day on sticky notes and then rip it down once you're completed with the items on that list. Heck, you can even write one item down per sticky note and rip it down as soon as the item is submitted. LIBERATION!!
3. Treat yourself.
Remember to treat yourself this month. If you get a large assignment done, go treat yourself to that Starbucks drink or order yourself in dinner. Rewards are a great way to get things done. Yes, it is bribery; however, sometimes you need that motivation to push yourself through the monumental amount of work you need to get done.
4. Try not to skip class.
I get it. The temptation to skip class to get other work done. We have all been there. However, sometimes it isn't a great idea; actually, it isn't a good idea. Why, you may ask? Well, when you skip class to get other work done, then you need to catch up on what you missed in the class you missed and then you add one more item to your long to-do list. Therefore, defeating the purpose of skipping class.
5. Remind yourself that grades aren't everything.
Sometimes it is hard to remember that your grades don't define you. However, it is important to remember in the month of November that as much as you have to do and how well you'd like to do, sometimes it isn't possible. Sometimes it is better to ask for that 10 point late extension, rather than hurting yourself to finish 3 assignments due on the same day. Because if you try to do well on 3 assignments at once, the chances aren't good for that happening. But if you ask for an extension on an assignment, you may loose some points; however, it probably won't be that detrimental in the end.
6. Remember, you are only human.
Remember you are only human and that no one can do everything. It is tempting to want to go out with friends on the weekend and then binge watch Netflix all comfy in your bed the day after; however, remember that sometimes it is okay. We are all human. We all make mistakes. We all get stressed out. But at the end of the day, you need to take care of yourself or nothing productive will get done.
