I’ve experienced a lot of firsts this year. I made the Dean’s List for the first time this past fall. I completed my first internship this spring. And I visited another continent for the first time—I spent 10 days traveling around France and England with my school’s Study Abroad program. I spent a lot of time preparing for this trip, but it’s one thing to read about a different country and another thing to actually experience it. That being said, I loved my time in Europe. If my flight was booked and my things were packed, I’d go back right now. But there are some things I wish I’d known before I left. That being said, I’ve compiled a list of tips for travelers heading off to Europe for the first time.
Dress nicely. Europeans in general dress more formally than Americans. You won’t see Europeans wearing baggy sweats, T-shirts with huge block print, or tennis shoes. Take some pride in your appearance. You’ll blend in with the locals instead of immediately being branded a tourist. Don’t talk so loud. In Europe, shouting is not an acceptable form of communication. If you can be heard above everyone else around you, you’re talking too loudly and you might get some dirty looks. Use your inside voice, and you’ll be fine. Try to speak the language of the country you’re visiting. A lot of Europeans, especially young people, can speak English. However, by trying to speak the language of the country you’re visiting, you’re showing respect for that country and the people who live there. Even if you’re not very good at speaking the language, try to speak it anyway. The effort is usually appreciated. Be adventurous. Don’t be afraid to try new foods and drinks. You may not like it, but at least you can say you tried it. French food, for example, is incredible. You won’t want to eat anything else ever again, trust me. Wear comfortable shoes. High heels + cobblestone= broken neck. And most importantly…HAVE FUN!
