Before I packed to come to Oxford, I read hundreds of blogs, posts, and lists in order to pack appropriately for my time in the UK. From fashion trends to weather forecasts, I did my research. I had layers, shoes (cute and practical), and organizational items for my desk once I arrived. I was so excited and felt well prepared!
But now, looking back, and attempting to somehow fit everything into my one checked bag, and my carry on, and backpack, I realize that I may have overpacked just a little bit, especially because no matter what, you will buy at least one souvenir that you have to get back home...
Tip #1: Try to only bring 30 pounds in your checked bag.
"WHAATTTTT?!" Believe me, you will thank yourself for it later when your flatmate is sitting on top of your suitcase to try and get it zipped.
But KB!!!! How do I do that? I'm glad you asked.
Tip #2: Only bring 4 pairs of shoes:
one hiking/weather proof, one pair of tennis shoes, one pair of flats, and one pair of dressier shoes (just no stilletos!). Unlike most cities in America, European streets are mainly cobblestone, filled with cracks and holes that seem to creep up on you. Bring shoes that are versatile so that your feet won't be obliterated by the end of your trip.
Tip #3: Buy necessities when you get there!
You don't need to weigh your suitcase down with shampoo and conditioner when you could pack an extra pair of jeans.
Tip #4: Check the weather for wherever you're going.
This seems like a no-brainer, but even the smartest people can sometimes pack the wrong clothes. You're going to pack a lot different for Oxford than you will for Madrid or for Japan - be smart about it!
Tip #5: Don't pack anything you don't want ruined.
Sometimes the laundry facilities aren't the best while you're abroad... So pick and choose wisely.
Tip #6: Pack lightly.
You really don't need 4 coats. Also, if you're going to only wear something once, don't bring it. And you definitely don't need blankets or a whole box of books that you won't have time to read.
Moral of the story is to be smart about what you pack! And if you know you're one of those people that wants to buy something for every person they've ever known, well... just be sure you can get your suitcase down the stairs
