My Time In A Women's Studies Class

Let's just say I know how Charlie Brown feels when he misses the football

My Time In A Women's Studies Class

Okay, I bet you're wondering, Why on earth would you take a women's studies class? Answer: I needed an elective and this would definitely get me out of my comfort zone. We covered topics from privilege and hair to gender roles and women's healthcare. I definitely learned a lot, but I was one of two white males in that class. I felt outnumbered and at first, voiceless. The class was an overwhelming amount of women of color. For once, I was the minority and the tables were turned.

To be honest, I was almost scared to voice my opinion in class. As a white, cis-gendered, heterosexual male, coming from a middle-class home where my parents are still together. For the most part, my opinions and feelings were the unpopular ones. The class was EXTREMELY liberal. As a Libertarian, I am socially tolerant but these felt like extremist liberal policies. When we talked about women's healthcare we talked about why women pay more than men. Well, it's because they have more things to pay for than men do. If you have more to pay for then you pay more. Sorry, not sorry. Nature sucks sometimes. I'm extremely pale and have to worry about sunburn and potentially skin cancer down the road a lot more than people who have the ability to tan or are naturally dark skinned.

The day after the Presidential election was a dark day for a lot of people in that class. A lot of them believed that Hillary Clinton lost because she is a woman. I don't believe that. I believe that the establishment rigged the primary and enough that even Bernie supporters would not support Hillary Clinton in the general election. I tried to explain that this was the scenario, but they were just too headstrong to hear it.

I was outnumbered in a class full of people who were not like me, so I picked my battles VERY carefully. My professor said that we had a welcoming environment, but every time I had something that was the slightest bit different, all hell broke loose. I'm glad I took the class, but I just had to restrain myself one too many times in order to keep class rolling along. If you want something that is out your comfort zone (Gentlemen), then this is your class. I recommend any class that you can fit into your schedule that will challenge you and pull you out of your comfort zone.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
