It’s hard to let go of someone we desperately want by our side, but sometimes it’s best to let go. When someone doesn’t prioritize you, it’s time to leave because you deserve better. When you allow someone to step all over you, to treat you like a shadow, you forget that you are the sun. Sometimes we need to put the love we feel for someone else aside and put ourselves first.
I understand that it’s scary to let go, to feel as if by letting go we must now face the world on our own, but isn’t it better to face this world alone than stay with someone who doesn’t want to be there? You deserve someone who lets you be on center stage under the spotlight, not behind the scenes. Regardless of how lovely they might treat you when you’re alone, if you become invisible in public that’s not love.
It gets overwhelming when you need to take a stand for yourself because you feel selfish, but there is nothing selfish in loving yourself and protecting your heart. How long can you really stand being invisible to the one you love? How horrible is the pain of realizing that they have time for everyone and everything but you? How heartbreaking is it when you text and get no response, or maybe you do but it’s after multiple texts or days later?
You deserve so much better. You deserve someone who’ll always know what to say. I get it: people are busy; they have other things to do, and this is not about devoting your life to someone else. But in today’s technological world, communicating takes only a few seconds. Expecting someone to answer you is not selfish, it’s not wanting to be the center of attention.
We’re all busy with school, work and whatever else, but when you care, you make the time to speak to someone. It’s what a friend does. It’s not selfish to expect to get back what you give. It’s frustrating and exhausting when a friendship or relationship becomes totally one-sided, and that’s when you know it’s time to let go.
You are allowed to put yourself first without people questioning you or believing you to be selfish. You are so worthy and beautiful — a rose among daffodils. You deserve to be taken care of, but you also deserve to take care of yourself. Let go of those people who make you feel like a shadow, an open room for those who will remind you that you are the sun. You are allowed to take care of yourself; you are allowed to let go.
