During the holiday season, I have come to realize that people often get wrapped up (no pun intended) in the materialistic aspects and do not focus on what truly matters. We need to remember the value of giving rather than getting. The meaning of Christmas has transformed from a day of celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ to a day full of gluttony and obsession with the material world. Right now, I am sure your wish list is comprised of electronics, clothes, jewelry, etc. and there is nothing wrong with that, as long as you keep in mind the true meaning of Christmas.
This holiday season, take time to let your loved ones know how much you appreciate them, because they are much more valuable than a Hoverboard or the latest iPhone. Happiness gained from objects is fleeting, but the happiness gained from giving to others and spending time with the ones who truly matter is everlasting.
Always remember to be thankful for what you have, because there are others out there who are much less fortunate than you. I think in this day and age we take how truly blessed we are for granted. Not only in third world countries, but in our own nation as well, there are families who are homeless, hopeless and starving. I definitely encourage everyone to donate clothing or food items this holiday season, or volunteer at a soup kitchen, but if you are unable to do so, please try to keep those families in your thoughts and prayers.
Please also try to keep the brave men and women protecting our country in your thoughts and prayers as well. My heart goes out to those courageous souls who are unable to visit with their families this Christmas. Our troops have made the ultimate sacrifice and have given us the greatest gift of all, our freedom and our safety.
I think the most important thing to keep in mind this Christmas is that it is not what's under the tree that matters, but the people surrounding the tree. Any small token of appreciation can go a long way. Not every gift has to be store bought, you can express your love from small homemade gifts to try and shy away from the materialistic aspect of the holiday.
Learn to appreciate every precious moment you get to spend with your family, especially if you are a college student that does not get to visit home very often due to your busy schedule. It's time to rethink your Christmas wish list and restore the meaning of the holiday season.
