This article was written for the sole purpose of opening the eyes and minds of readers, simply to realize that many humans in our generation may be living in a fantasy, one that is seemingly impossible to recognize amidst the craziness that is the secular status quo. This was not written to offend, nor to single anyone apart from the norm, but simply to manifest a thought that leads to others, and discover that the fantasy you may be living is only hurting you.
For several decades now, society has developed a severe and debilitating case of desensitization. Whether toward our fragile lives that we can lose in a moment's notice, to the lax and casual perspective on the issue of pornography, violence and death, it's without a doubt that the secular emotional status quo has gone up and vanished; either society simply doesn't bat an eye toward emotional stability, consumed in their state of affairs or a normal and healthy lifestyle simply isn't suitable for them.
1. Pornography
Pornography is an extreme, but relevant topic of the desensitization of many teenagers, young adults and even older adults. It has simply taken over as the "normal" and "accepted" issue to engage in and discuss, more often than not a gateway to other sexual decisions. Simply put, the decline of dopamine and CRF-1 receptors (the pleasure center, and what causes the brain to raise dopamine, respectively) hinder our minds to fully comprehend what we are in fact, seeing and experiencing especially when face-to-face with a real human. This has given many adolescents the opportunity to become numb to actual emotional reaction, seemingly watching without end. It is without a doubt, a debilitating affair, one that most do not recognize until it is too late.
2. Violence
Violence is an enormously desensitized concept in society. Four decades ago, there was hardly any gratuitous violence on the big screen or on the TV set at home. It was a notion purposely left out of the every day human experience, not something left for a small child to stumble upon by accident.
In 2015 violence is everywhere; it is in schools, on the streets, at home, on the big screen (both in the theater and at home) and in video games, yet fought against in other countries but our own. However this desensitization has become so drastic because of the sheer amount of violence that occurs in our every day lives. School shootings have not become uncommon and killing of innocent journalists failed to reach top stories of many local news outlets. Violence has become normal, and until we realize that, sadly, it will relentlessly carry on.
3. Music
Music is yet another factor compared to what it used to be. Overall, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, the Doors are just a few examples of singers who wrote original lyrics for issues and affairs that mattered, ones that have necessary value to human beings. So many artists nowadays sing/rap about sex, drugs, sexual issues, and sexual innuendos and are either completely unaware or simply don't bat an eye toward one of the worst effects this can have on our generation: affecting and influencing younger kids, manufacturing curious thoughts that the simply pre-date. This can very seriously affect their mental and emotional growth, in shockingly negative ways.
Music has been radically redefined in our minds, and the only thing we do about it is nod our head to the beat and recite memorized lyrics.
Society is carrying on as if things normal and do not need a change, or anything new. We've come to a consensus that the status quo of the emotional and mental health is normal and fails to need to improve. This alone will either maintain its position or completely disappear if something does not put an end to a severe case of numbness. One of Ghandi's most revered and popular quotes says it all: "Be the change you want to see in the world." All those who realize that our emotional and mental health are being compromised can do is hope others can follow in our paths, because after all it just takes one heart to save a life.
