As you have probably already started your New Year's resolution, I would like to say a little something:
When choosing a New Year's resolution, many people choose something for them to look better, or "be skinny." "I want to lose ___ pounds so that I look better." No! This isn't how things should be in your life. Obesity is at an all time high in the United States, being "fat" should not mean you can't look good.
Here's my thoughts on how New Year's resolutions should be.
1. You should make them for yourself.
Make yourself happy, don't try to please others when making your resolutions.
2. Set realistic goals.
Losing weight is great—amazing, actually. But, if that is your resolution, make sure it is a realistic and a reachable goal. "I want to lose 50 pounds by eating healthier and not going to the gym." Well, although possible, this is not a realistic goal.
3. Try a different New Year's resolution.
If the past three years you've said "I'm going to lose weight" and you have (or have not) accomplished this, try something new. Maybe say that you're going to be a happier person or save money instead of resorting to the same goal.
4. Have an accountability partner.
Now, I have had some accountability partners in the past that haven't been too accountable. Make sure this person knows your goal and also has one set. Also, make sure this person will actually help you when accomplishing these goals.
5. Make time for your resolution.
We have all used the excuses "my diet will start tomorrow" and "it's cheat day". If you really want to accomplish this goal, you should make time for them so your dreams can become reality.
6. Reward yourself.
Allow yourself to be awarded when you reach your goal. Whether this be something big or little, you will be looking forward to it the whole time you are working towards your goal.
7. Set smaller goals within your goal.
If your goal is to lose 50 pounds by 2018, maybe set 10 pound goals in between that with little rewards at the end of each. This will really help in the long run as they will act as milestones.
I hope you take these tips into consideration when setting your new resolutions, whether they be for the new year or not. I wish you the best of luck in reaching your goals!
