With the next presidential election swiftly approaching, candidates have begun to announce themselves and start their campaigns. One candidate in particular has caught America's eye. Her name is Elizabeth Warren.
What could be so interesting about a Senator from Massachusetts? Well, Elizabeth Warren went live on Instagram. Shortly after starting her live video, Warren said, "Hold on a sec. I'm going to get me a beer." Warren proceeded to walk off camera, then returned beer in hand. Before she returned to the main topic of her video, she had a short conversation with her husband on the live video.
Now, this is old news. By now, most people know Warren drank a beer on Instagram. But how did people react to this? Elizabeth Warren drinking a beer on Instagram live received mixed reactions.
Let's back track to Warren's Native American ancestry. There was much turmoil between Native Americans, specifically the Cherokees, and Elizabeth Warren late in 2018. A lot was said on whether or not she truly was Native American. It angered the Cherokees, because there is a difference between having Native American ancestry and presently being part of a Native American tribe. Kim Tallbear, a member of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate tribe in South Dakota, wrote about this in her book "Native American DNA: Tribal Belonging and the False Promise of Genetic Science."
I mentioned Warren's Native American ancestry, because a lot of the reactions to her drinking beer went back to the Native Americans. Many comments on Instagram and YouTube were criticizing her for drinking the beer on camera, because they claimed she was mocking Native Americans and the stereotype that they are all alcoholics. On the other hand, other comments were attacking her for also being an alcoholic due to her Native American ancestry.
Going along with the negative feedback Warren received for this video, many people on YouTube and Instagram accused it of being "fake," "inauthentic," and "bad acting." These people thought the video was staged and that Warren was just trying to appeal to the average Joe by making herself seem like your average every-day person, but one man, Martin Shkreli, even said, "We see what you're doing and we're not falling for it."
Of course, with negative reactions, there are also positive reactions. While there were those who thought the entire Instagram video was staged, there were also those who wholeheartedly believed it. Many people love how "genuine" she is, and the fact that she is fighting for the middle class. The video to them does make her seem just like you and me. It paints the picture of a working middle class woman enjoying a beer after a long day at work. These people relate to her and thank her for fighting for them.
In addition to those who relate to Warren, other supporters reacted to this video in a positive way. There were many well-wishers and citizens of Massachusetts supporting their Senator and leaving kind and thoughtful comments for Warren. However, the hulk of Warren's followers support her due to her promise to take down big corporations. Erik Wegner, filmmaker and actor, said, "You're amazing and the only person who has shown to fight the greedy interest groups and corrupt corporations."
After looking through comment after comment on YouTube and Instagram, what I found above is what the majority of people who viewed the Instagram video believe. It was split pretty 50-50, with many people supporting her and giving positive comments, while others were giving negative feedback to it. Will Elizabeth Warren win the 2020 Presidential Election? Only time will tell. But for now, we'll wait for her next live Instagram video to see what she'll do next.
