Thoughts A New Yorker Has Going To College In The South

You can keep your grits, but I'll take some sweet tea.

I don't know what it is exactly, but southerners just seem to be a different breed of people. If you're a New Yorker, or any northerner for that matter, that has somehow found your way to college in the south, I'm sure these thoughts have crossed your mind once or twice (a day.)

Ugh all my friends have two more weeks of summer, why does my school have to start so early?

Why am I sitting in class while all my friends at home are at the beach?

Wow I forgot how friendly people are here, this is so nice.

It’s so damn hot here.

Excuse me but why are you wearing khakis to class, its just class.

Do any brunettes live here?

No, please walk slower, I want to be late to class.

Ok now I remember that I don’t like all these friendly people, it’s weird.

Do you have shorts under that T-shirt girl?

But I do like how the cars just stop for me when I cross the street.

And the drivers don’t even give me the finger, how nice.

I want a bagel.

No I do not want to go Greek, but thank you.

Where are all the obnoxiously loud Italians, I miss them.

No more BBQ, please.

But I could go for some Chik-fil-A.

What are Norts?

Sure you can record me saying dog, talk, and water to show your friends at home.

No, I’ve never been to the Empire State Building. Yes, I know I live 45 minutes away from it.

I want pizza.

Are you all aware there are other colors besides pastels?

I want a BEC and half and half.

What do you mean you don’t know where your family came from? Pretty much everyone’s family came from somewhere in Europe.

I’m sorry I cannot understand a word you are saying.

Please let me burn your Chacos for you, it would be my pleasure.

No, I don’t know your cousins best friend’s brother that also lives on Long Island.

Where is the nearest deli?

You call this snow? Hah -- they wouldn’t even bring out the plows for this at home.

No, I don’t have a house in the Hamptons.

Do you all have a habit of losing your things and that’s why you monogram literally everything you own?

Why are you in a collared shirt for your 8 a.m.?

Where are all the boys in Timberlands and sweatpants?

Please for the love of God walk faster.

Why is this person smiling at me? Do I know her? No, I don’t know her, why is she smiling?!

Wow I didn't realize how much I curse.

I don’t think these people have ever watched a hockey game in their life.

Maybe I should invest in a pair of cowboy boots.

You mean your high school didn’t have a lacrosse team? Pfffff, sucks for you.

Why are we watching college football on TV when we could be watching the NFL.

I see why we won the war.

Yes, I would love some sweet tea.

I am waiting on line, not in line, duh.

Will it ever get cold here, I miss my sweatpants.

I swear I will never say "y'all."

I miss my favorite diner.

So this is a State Fair.

No, I am not rich.

Nor am I Jewish.

Am I supposed to know who this “Lilly” person you are referring to is and why you love her new pattern?

Do they not teach people how to drive here or…

Do they even play rap on the radio here?

It’s 45 degrees out, do you really need a heavy jacket, hat and gloves.

Why would anyone willingly eat grits? Ew.

Okay, maybe Patagonia stuff is pretty nice.

No sweetie, bless your heart.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
