Some people may think that Greek life is not for them, but for me, it was the right decision. I knew going into college freshman year, I wanted to join a sorority. Growing up, I had seen all my older friends go through recruitment and post the bid day pictures that made sorority life look so lavish and amazing. With social life and getting to wear your letters, I could not wait to get in a sorority. Little did I know that joining Kappa Alpha Theta would become more than that to me. Joining Kappa Alpha Theta gave me:
1. Sisterhood
Having a sense of belonging and sisterhood. It can be hard to find a sense of unity at college. By joining a sorority, the student body became less daunting. It also made it easier to find a home among people like myself. Being a sister can give you a sense of identity and the feeling of belonging to a family.
2. Socialization
One benefit of belonging to a sorority is that you’ll never lack any social activities on and off campus. If you are up for a night out, someone else will be too. If you are up for a study night, someone will be there as well. It is a great way to meet new people.
3. Academic Support
When many people think of sororities, not many think of it consisting of academics. Contrary to popular belief, a great amount of emphasis is placed on academics in a sorority. An advantage of being in a sorority is that support is readily available to you as well. Most likely, there is a girl in the house who can help you with whatever subject you need help on. GPA is quite important as well, to keep all the girls on track and on their way to success.
4. Personal Growth
As a member of a sorority, there is expectation of social interaction and personal development. Experience and communication skills are enriched by activities one participates in, as well as the people you meet and the positions in the house you may be chosen to take part in.
5. Consciousness of Society
Each sorority will have a cause or organization they raise money for. If you want to participate in philanthropic events, a sorority is for you.
6. Loyalty and Friendship
When you are initiated into a sorority, you are promised to make friends for life. The atmosphere a sorority develops lifelong friendships, along with loyalty to your sisters.
7. Memories
It is said that college is the best four years of your life. In these four years, if you are in a sorority you will make memories that will last you a lifetime. Unique experiences and funny stories will certainly be made.
Most of all, a sorority has given me a home away from home. Like I said: Thought Greek, Thought Right.
