Americans are possibly taking their education for granted. I’ll tell you why I believe that. Every year, many young children and teenagers from Central America and Mexico cross the border to get through the American land of what is known as the “Land of Opportunity.”
Meanwhile, people like you and me are not seeing the advantages of having an education. These kids who leave their homelands are escaping gangs, poverty, lack of schooling, and a country that will never give them what they need to survive. You’re lucky to be American-born. You’re lucky to know that you have a family to come home to and a roof over your head. You’re very fortunate to know that you will have something to eat the next day.
These kids don’t have their parents with them. They are either alone or living with relatives. Imagine how uncomfortable it must be to think that you are a being a “bother” in someone else’s eyes. It’s impossible to know how that feels if you have never lost anything or anyone. In this world, we must learn that nothing should be taken for granted.
Not only that, a language barrier also exists with these kids. I can imagine how difficult it must be to be foreign to a country you have never seen. It’s not easy to be accustomed to change. It’s also not easy to learn a new language. People assume it is simply because they know how to speak it. Well, it’s not. I have tried to learn French and it’s hard. You can easily learn the basics of any language in the world but it’s not the same when you know you have to learn it in order to communicate with the people around you.
People have a really bad perception of kids who enter this country illegally. Try to have empathy. They are doing more than you are. They are literally stepping out of their bubble because they have to and don’t have a choice. You think you are better than them because you could have everything they don’t.
You’re wrong. I think you should never feel superior to others just because they come from a different background or have it harder than you. One thing they are learning and will have knowledge of is how to work harder for something they want and actually, earn it with honest money. We have to get rid of these stereotypes about every ethnicity out there.
Not every Mexican is a drug dealer. I have come across people in my life that barely came to the states two years ago and they have done great things like any other person would. From learning English to graduating high school, they did it. This opinion I have is because of my parents. I know what they went through and all the work they have done to be here. It’s because of them that I've been grateful to have a roof over my head, food on the table, happiness and an education I can keep forever.
