The following is an edited version of a Facebook post I wrote, which I felt pertinent to the nation at large:
Anyone who knows me knows that there are a few things that I hold to be more important than ANYTHING else. These are love, respect, and knowledge. I do my best to love all people, to respect those with whom my opinions differ and to learn as much as I can about as many different things as possible. With all of that being said, it's time I said something about a few things.
First off, I'd like to explain a few things about the Black Lives Matter movement, things I've learned by opening my eyes, ears and heart to my brothers and sisters who face discrimination daily because of the color of their skin.
***Individuals who say the phrase "Black Lives Matter" are NOT, in ANY way, claiming that they are the only lives that matter. That other lives don't matter. They're crying out to a nation that, after over 150 years since the abolishment of slavery, they still face horrible mistreatment.
***If you believe that racism isn't a problem in this nation, you need to read data. Our prisons are filled with people of color, and DISPROPORTIONATELY so. Studies have shown that a person with a "black-sounding name" is LESS LIKELY to be hired for a job than a person with a "white-sounding name." The recent shootings of unarmed black individuals are unacceptable.
***Saying the phrase "Black Lives Matter" does NOT mean a person is anti-police. I have a great deal of respect for the men and women in blue, but, as with nearly all professions, there are good and bad police officers. A black person is DISPROPORTIONATELY more likely to be shot by a police officer while unarmed than a white person who is unarmed.
Second, Donald Trump is the complete opposite of all of the things I value, which is why I will not be supporting Trump/Pence for President. Rather than try to bring our country together, Donald Trump has taken each of the things that make us different and manipulated them into reasons to fear one another. Put yourself in the shoes of another person. If you were going to be subject to government surveillance because of your religion, would you feel that was right? If someone told you that you couldn't marry the person you love because of their biological sex and/or gender identity, would you accept that? I won't, and I wouldn't advise any of you to either. If you need examples of Donald Trump blatantly disregarding the values of love, respect, and knowledge, take a look at this.
The New York Times has catalogued all of Donald Trump's tweets since the election season began. As of now, he's insulted over 250 people, places, and things. If you are okay with a bully running our country, then I beg you to reconsider. As someone who has been subjected to bullying for many years, I cannot and will not stand for it.
To make matters worse, Keith Olbermann gave a 17 minute speech about "176 Reasons Donald Trump Shouldn't Be President" through GQ Magazine. This speech outlines a number of instances of Donald Trump lying, acting in ways inconsistent with the moral values that we purport to have as a nation and simply being rude to others. Donald Trump can not be president if America wishes to retain the status it holds as one of the greatest nations in the history of the earth.
