For those of us in the Northeast, it's time. It's time to go back to school.
If you're anything like I am, you're practically bouncing off the walls with excitement. You've been texting your roommates, planning everything from your first movie night to your first night out together. You're dorm stuff is bought, packed and ready to go. In fact, you've already got one foot out the door.
But then you remember something you'll miss. A few things actually.
1. Your shower — Does anyone actually enjoy showering with shoes?
2. Your summer job — and probably the paycheck that came with it.
3. Your queen-size bed — Making the adjustment to a twin is always hard.
4. Your local coffee joint — Iced coffee, soy milk, no sugar. They've got your order memorized.
5. Your dog — not that I would know. But if I had the dog I've always wanted, I imagine I'd miss him a whole lot.
6. Your car — and the freedom that comes with being able to go anywhere at any time.
7. Your own space — As much as I love living with my friends, there are times when I just want to retreat into my own space that I don't need to share.
8. Access to a fully-stocked fridge — one you didn't have to pay for, either.
9. Mom's home-cooked meals — Any home-cooked meals are an upgrade from dining hall food.
10. Mom and Dad — Sometimes it's nice to be independent, and sometimes it's nice to be taken care of.
What can you do to make it a little easier? Focus on the things at school that you've missed all summer — your friends, living in a community, the constant activity and flurry of campus life, your classes — yes, even some of your classes — and your extracurriculars. Really, anything that makes you love school.
And before you know it, the things you'll miss and the things you're looking forward to will balance each other out, and you'll be heading off to school with little to no worries. Just keep your eyes on the future and remember: "Today is a good day for a good day."
