As we all return to (or begin) college, we are getting accustomed to the lovely dorm-style living everyone experiences when living on a college campus. Unless you get really lucky, or maybe unlucky, odds are this means that you're returning to school to move in with a roommate. Whether you've known this person for years, or you just met them on move-in day, there are always things you wish you would've known before unpacking your things in that dual-occupancy room.
1. How sensitive they are to sound
Sometimes people can sleep through a machine-gun target practice, other people literally wake up if you zip up your backpack. It's a real bummer if you waste your time tip toeing around the world's heaviest sleeper, but it might be worse if you wake up your roommate getting ready for your 8am when they've got class at 1pm.
2. Just how much stuff they are actually bringing into this miniature living space
Some people bring a comforter, their clothes, and some basic necessities. Other people bring seven pillows, ten large paintings, an entire wardrobe, ten pairs of shoes, eight bags of snacks....on just the first trip. Not that this can't be solved through some organization, but its very alarming when you see your roommate walking through the door with more things than you've ever owned.
3. How many visitors they intend on having over and how often
A sleepover is cool. Having a significant other over is cool. But when there is a permanent air mattress taking up all of the empty space in your room...not cool.
4. And how they feel about you having a visitor
Are they going to get mad if you want a friend to sleepover one Saturday night? Or if you have a study session one afternoon?
5. What kind of weird habits they have
As someone who could be referred to as the 'weird' roommate, sometimes people forget how odd their habits are to people who haven't lived with them their whole lives. While weird habits are okay, sometimes you wish you would've been told that your roommate eats powdered peanut butter out of the jar, frequently rearranging furniture to relieve stress, and/or talks to themselves on occasion.
6. If they have a significant other (or significant others...)
Honestly, its fine if you're riding solo, or if you have a bae, but it would be nice to know these facts before you move in with your roommate and their bf/gf... double bonus if your roommate has more than one significant other, because nothing is more awkward than trying to keep their numerous flings' names straight.
7. If they know the difference between sharing and stealing
I'm all for letting your roommate borrow some toothpaste when they run out, or giving them a bag of Goldfish when they're craving something cheesy. But unless previously stated, it is not okay to go into your roommate's things and put on their clothes/eat their food/use their laptop. Personal. Boundaries. Y'all.
8. Their music taste
You're either going to have dance parties with your roommate or you're going to passive aggressively try and get them (or beg them) to stop playing that horrendous Macklemore song.
9. If they are a night owl or an early bird
If an morning person gets paired with a night person, there will be very little sleep had by all. You're probably going to have to figure out a system/get ear plugs if you're in this boat.
10. How they handle conflict
Handling conflict is a necessary evil when living with another human being. The real question here is if they can talk it out or move past it like an adult, or if they're the type of person to be passive aggressive and/or put Nair in your shampoo.
11. What they think about you
First impressions are stressful; first impressions with a person you'll live with eight months out of the year are incredibly stressful. It's going to be awkward every once in a while, but eventually you'll be able to work through it...or switch rooms during room change week.
Needless to say, it's interesting moving in with a stranger, or anyone you're not used to living with. There are all kinds of stories that can be told to inspire the ideas in the list above. You'll never know what to expect, and that is part of the mystery/terror/excitement about having a roommate. So if you can't find these out before you move in, don't stress. You'll find out soon enough, and it might just make for a funny story in the future!
