Valentine's Day: a holiday surrounding the unconditional love and appreciation that a couple shares for one another. Well, what if you don't have a significant other? Are you supposed to sit at home alone, eating a whole pint of Ben and Jerry's, feeling sorry for yourself? Most people may think that this alternative is acceptable; however, I am writing this to tell you to wipe the "Chocolate Therapy" ice cream from the corners of your mouth, get out, and treat yo'self.
There are plenty of things you can do to make yourself feel special on this extremely overrated holiday.
1. Treat yo'self. Splurge a little and give yourself a hot new wardrobe. Since you don't have to worry about spending an arm and a leg on your significant other, you can treat yourself to an adorable new outfit. Since Valentine's Day is all about love, make sure you spend the day loving yourself.
2. Throw a party. There are bound to be plenty of other singles your age in your surrounding college town, so let loose and throw a mixer party. Who knows, maybe you won't end up alone, after all.
3. Find something new to try. Challenge yourself to do something you normally wouldn't try. Test your comfort zone and indulge in a new hobby.
4. Volunteer. Since Valentine's Day is usually a holiday of giving, make it your opportunity to give back to the community you live in. Spread the love to those who are in need. I guarantee that volunteering will be much more fulfilling than a dinner date would.
Valentine's Day can be a huge bummer if you're single, but only if you allow it to be. Regardless of whether or not you're with someone, you should be happy. Instead of wishing that you could have a little more romance in your life, go out and do something fun for yourself. After all, love finds you when you're least expecting it.
