I’m not really sure if the world is ready for 2017—but here goes nothing right? Year after year we are told to make a New Year’s resolution in order to create positive changes to our lives but it usually ends up being something pointless that never actually happens. If you want to be a realist in this New Year, then don’t make just one resolution to lose 10 pounds or to get a new job—instead, closely examine what you need to remove from your life in order to make yourself happier. It’s 2017 people, it’s time to let go and drop some sh*t.
1. The fact that Donald Trump is the new President
All we can do is just drop it. It happened and it must be accepted. The only thing we can focus on now is what he will do as the new POTUS. We can only hope for the best at this point.
2. Toxic relationships
The beginning of the year is all about starting fresh. Even if it’s just another day and nothing in your life changes, it can be an opportunity for you to try and be a little bit happier. Most of us usually experience a few toxic people sometime in our lives—we can learn from them when they hurt us, we can feel bad and try to help them and we can be fake nice all we want, but when it comes down to who you surround yourself with, it's completely normal to have to cut some people off. And that’s OK. There is a big difference between an “acquaintance” and a “friend,” it’s up to you to decide who is who.
3. Your attitude
An ugly attitude calls for an ugly year—so like your parents used to tell you, “drop your attitude!” There have been numerous studies concluding that pessimism is hazardous to people’s health. According to a study by The New York Times, negativity and pessimism results in cases of hypochondria and poor well-being. Try to start the year off with positive thoughts and ambitions. No time for negativity in 2017.
4. Unhealthy habits
Many people think New Year’s resolutions are stupid, but it can really be a fun, interactive way to make a change in your life for the better. Make a resolution promise with someone close to you and set a goal to challenge each other. There are ways to interactively improve your life and dropping the smallest bad habit could make a huge difference. Set a goal and commit to it. The achievement will feel refreshing.
5. Grudges
The meaning of forgetting petty arguments and letting go of grudges always refers back to the ever-popular saying—because life is way too short. It really is though. Forgive and forget, because eventually, none of it even matters.
6. Your phone
OK, don’t literally drop your phone (because cracked screens are a serious problem) but put it down gently and don’t pick it up for a while. In this technological, social media-driven era we live in, it’s easy to lose touch with the outside world from being so focused on what everyone in the virtual world is doing. Your obsessions with social media and the pressure of living a life as perfect as many seem in their Instagram photos may actually be what is driving you crazy. The constant need to be in touch with the world can make you lose touch with yourself and what's really important. Live in the moment with your own two eyes, not behind the screen of a smartphone.
7. The feeling of caring what people think about you
Relating to putting down your phone in order to help social media addiction, caring what people think plays a huge role in this psychologically obsessive nature.
8. That booty!
Of all the things you need to drop in 2017, droppin' that booty is the most important. This means to live carefree and let nothing hold you back. Dance like nobody's watching, feel confident in your own skin and laugh your a** off if you're having a good time. Never feel ashamed of that. Shake that a** like you've never shaken it before and don't give a damn about what anybody thinks! Let's start off the New Year with nothing but happiness.
