There are so many fun things to do when the holidays are around the corner and when the family comes to town. Here is a good list of things to do for this upcoming holiday season!

Thanksgiving

This wonderful holiday brings many families together. With lots of yummy food, you may end up in a food coma by the end of the night.

Black Friday

This very popular event is the day after Thanksgiving. People line up very early waiting for the doors to open, pushing and shoving for certain items. People will stay at certain stores for many hours, for they use this timeto do their Christmas shopping.


The Polar Express

In Independence, Akron and in Canton, you will be able to go on The Polar Express. You better start buying your tickets soon before they sell out! On this special ride, you are given a nice hot cocoa and cookies. Then, there is story time. You will see the North Pole Village, some caroling , and the most important part, a visit from Santa on the ride! Make sure to wear your jammies !

The rink at Wade Oval

Want to get some exercise after Thanksgiving? Go to the beautiful Wade Oval ice rink in University Circle where admission is just $2, (and if you need to rent some skates it is just an extra $3 dollars.) This rink has a one of a kind view and setting. When it gets later towards Christmas time, the rink offers a Skate with Santa day! Don’t miss a chance to skate away those Thanksgiving calories and enjoy the gorgeous view!

A Christmas Story House & Museum

This house is located in Cleveland, Ohio. When winter comes, this house,now a museum, is decorated to look like it did in the movie “A Christmas Story”.

People drive by this house and stop in. The hours are: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. People enjoy walking around and going in the gift shop as well; however, there is a fee from $6 - $10 dollars depending on age.

Movember

Also known as “No Shave November”, is dedicated to men who decide not to shave for a month. During this month, there are many galas, parties and events that take place where people go. The main purpose is to help raise awareness of men’s health issues.

Glow at the Cleveland Botanical Garden

At the Cleveland Botanical Garden this winter, keep your eyes open for the winter wonderland! There will be over 100 gingerbread houses, trees and kid activities displayed all throughout the Botanical Garden. The Garden Express train will be running, and you will have the ability to make and decorate your own gingerbread house. The cost is free for members, and tickets range from $12-$16 dollars.

Kris Kringle Inventionasium

Mr. and Mrs. Kringle, along with their many elves, help you with a one-hour long journey through the Inventionasium workshop at Tower City in Cleveland, Ohio. Visitors wear lab coats allowing themto help form and brainstorm ideas and make toys. The most important thing of all is to use your imagination on this wildly creative, candy-colored kaleidoscope workshop.

We all love Christmas. It is one of our favorite holiday seasons. It is our time to be with family, celebrate Jesus Christ and God, and even give Santa some milk and cookies before he comes to give us our presents.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines.
