Ever have the sudden urge to burst into song at any given cue? Ask for tickets to Off-Broadway shows for every holiday? Are you able to drive to your local community theatre in your sleep? If you answered yes to any of these questions then this is the article for you!
The life of a theatre kid is one of devotion, sacrifice, and hard work, that's for sure. But more importantly, it is filled with energy, creativity, and an inevitable passion for life. The theatre is a world of its own and along with it comes a lifestyle known only to those immersed in it. Here's a closer look...
1. "I can't, I have rehearsal."
Cast in the upcoming musical? Might as well kiss your social life goodbye and tell your friends you'll see them in two months.
2. A good portion of your wardrobe consists of cast t-shirts.
If you don't have a cast t-shirt were you really even in the show? You can expect to be asked "Where's your name?" at least a dozen times throughout the day.
3. Being called a "drama queen" suddenly becomes quite the compliment.
"You're so over the top", "Why thank you, I've been working on it!"
4. Your non-theatrical friends dread riding in your car knowing your Pandora stations are made up of 25 various Broadway selections.
But really, who wouldn't want to listen to Phantom on their way to Sonic?
5. Tech Week is the death of your health, GPA, and sanity.
Sleep? Homework? Food? I'll get to it next week...
6. There is nothing more humbling than that hideous costume you have to wear in Act 2.
From a polkadot dress and piggy-tails to a bunny costume complete with fur and floppy ears, this girl has worn it all with pride.
7. The reoccurring nightmare that you're onstage on opening night and completely blank ending in rotten tomatoes thrown in your direction.
We've all had it. Thankfully, you've dedicated the past three months of your life to learning your lines and nail it.
8. Few bonds compare to those with your cast mates.
They've seen the best and worst parts of you and love you just the same. You've been through everything together from anxious auditions to standing ovations at curtain call and you wouldn't want to share it with anyone else.
9. Theatre is as cult-like as it seems to outsiders.
Once you've been exposed to all of the rituals, customs, and secrets of the theatre, there's no going back... Once you're in, you're in for life.
10. Strike is always bittersweet as you think back on all of the memories made during your production.
Good, bad, and ugly, memories made at the theatre are ones that will last a lifetime.
11. At the end of the day, all the hard work, dedication, and sacrifice you put into a show always pays off and you wouldn't change it for the world.
Nothing compares to the raw passion poured into a show and when everything comes full circle, it is something to cherish and be so proud of.
