Recently, Brock Turner was released from prison after three months of serving time for raping an unconscious woman behind a dumpster. Although Turner was charged with three felony counts, Judge Aaron Persky felt that a longer prison sentence would ruin his "college experience." Because, of course, jail time is a "steep price to pay for twenty minutes of action." As a result, Brock Turner was only sentenced to six months in prison, reducing to three months for good behavior. So let that sink in for a minute. Brock Turner served NINETY DAYS for violating another human being. He was barely in jail long enough for me to figure out what classes I wanted to take this semester. Here's a list of things that take as long as Brock Turner's time in jail:
Summer break
The typical summer break encompasses the months of June, July, and August. If Turner's sentence would've started at the beginning of June, he would've been released in time for the Fall Semester. So, instead of getting to vacation with his family, he would've been forced to miss the hottest months of the year to serve his sentence. But no worries, he would've been right back out in time to get back in the swing of things for the semester.
The first trimester of pregnancy
At twelve weeks, a fetus is about the size of a lime, weighing only half an ounce. At this point a fetus is able to start to move fingers and toes, clench eyes, and move the mouth. By the time Brock Turner got released, a newly pregnant woman would just be getting into maternity clothes.
A baby learns to roll over
It takes about three months for a newborn infant to roll over on its own. In the same amount of time Brock Turner had to serve, a newborn just gathered enough strength to push itself over. I'm willing to bet that if you ask any new mother, they will tell you that the time between birth and this new development flies by.
Scheduling a surgery
Surgeries must be planned well in advance. Usually it takes about three months to get an opening in the OR (pun fully intended). Someone close to me recently planned a surgery to get a cyst removed off of her ovary. Can you guess how long in advance? Three months. Let's say that Brock Turner needed his wisdom teeth removed. He could plan the surgery on the way to serve his sentence and be out just in time to get his wisdom teeth removed.
What I've learned from the Turner case is that it's okay for you to RAPE an unconscious HUMAN BEING as long as you are a college athlete. This case sets a terrifyingly dangerous precedent. As a college woman, I am so afraid to walk alone at night on campus or get too drunk at a party because of what might happen to me. The worst part is going through a trial and being told that the violation of your body wasn't enough to send a rapist to jail. Just because someone was out late and/or drinking doesn't give someone permission to take away your innocence. I want this to be heard loud and clear. NO ONE IS ENTITLED TO YOUR BODY.
