Georgia Tech

Things to know before attending Georgia Tech:

1. The Campus Recreation Center is located on West Campus.

It has basketball courts, weights/exercise machines, an Olympic pool, and more. It also happens to be very far from East Campus, but you can take the bus on weekdays. Buses do not run on weekends unfortunately. If you enjoy it and go often, consider getting a locker to store your belongings.

2. Apparently the dining hall on West Campus, Woodruff, has bad food.

Living on East Campus allows convenient access to both Brittain and North Avenue dining halls. Both of these dining halls offer omelettes in the morning. North Avenue offers noodles for lunch and stir fry for lunch and dinner, made for each individual based on their choice of ingredients. Brittain offers “burritos” instead, with varying “styles” each day.

3. Brittain’s To Go

Go into the dining hall on weekdays and grab stuff from the area next to the counter that adds up to 4 points. Different items are worth different amounts of points. Best for snacks, the food there is atrocious.

4. East Campus is closer to the fraternity houses.

5. What is a BUZZCARD?

A Buzzcard serves as your campus ID, pass to dining halls with a meal plan, and form of payment with Buzzfunds.

6. What are BUZZFUNDS?

Simply put, it’s like money you load onto your BuzzCARD. Benefit of not being charged tax sometimes.

7. What is a MEAL PLAN?

You get a set number of entrances into dining halls per semester, or unlimited. The freshman plan is unlimited and also gives a modest amount of Buzzfunds and Dining Points to go with it.

8. WHAT ARE DINING POINTS??

Money that you can only use to eat food at dining places at Georgia Tech.

9. Mailbox?

Mine is locked with the wrong combination, never opened it once. Don’t count on having a mailbox at Tech. You’ll want to use the Package Pickup though for ordering from Amazon and the like.

10. Getting back to the ATL airport.

Go to the North Avenue MARTA station and take the MARTA to the airport. It’s that easy. The station is located across the North Avenue bridge from the East Campus residence halls.

11.The WiFi here is of dubious quality, so bring an Ethernet cable if you care about having a good connection.

Speeds are obviously faster when no one’s awake.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
