Things I Really Wish I Knew Before Freshman Year

Second semester is different from the first.

Things I Really Wish I Knew Before Freshman Year
Molly Easley

Earlier in the school year, I wrote an article about what I had learned freshman year that I did not know coming into it. Those things, while still true, have changed a bit and I am also going to add a few more to the list. From the middle of last semester to the middle of this semester, my life has changed drastically. Nobody can ever expect what will happen in life, but I wish I would have had these tips for these life-changing experiences, so here's to the incoming freshman on what to expect about freshman year beyond the basic things.

You will become scared.

First semester you are taking in all of the freedom and not really taking anything seriously. You're enjoying being away from home away from your parents' supervision, and you love doing what you want, when you want. Second semester the panic will hit that you are really about to be on your own, and you will start to miss the simplicity of living at home and your parents and having no real responsibility.

You will change.

More than you know or could ever expect. It is very overwhelming and it causes strains in relationships and even causes some to end. This causes stress and the struggle of finding yourself and what you want to do with your life.

This causes your circle to change.

The people you were with last semester most likely will not be the same people you are around this semester. Things change and people change.

You need time alone.

I am not saying anything is wrong with being in a relationship in college, but being on both sides, you need time to figure out who you are and what you want to do. No judgements if you are not single in college, but I definitely recommend it for a while at least.

Take advantage of the time with your friends.

It is almost spring break, and then it will be summer before I know it. That is so scary that my freshman year is almost over, and how I will not be around my friends anymore. This is the best time of your life, do not waste it.

Accept change and run with it.

You can reject it and be sad about it all you want to, but God throws curveballs at you sometimes and you just have to learn to love them. Do not waste this final semester of your freshman year being sad or trying too hard at things that do not matter.

Have fun. Enjoy. After this year, school will take over your life and you will barely have the time for the freedom to do all the fun things you can do now.

Oh and one unspoken thing, I still advise to avoid 8 a.m.s. Just do not do it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
