1. “Do you ever straighten it?”

If I want to waste 3 hours for a result that’s less than sub-par then sure, otherwise I’ve come to embrace it for what it is. Do you spend 3 hours a morning doing your hair? I really truly hope not. Also I don’t know why this question is always so popular because it’s subtlety implying that I should have a desire to change it? I don’t really hear people asking straight haired folks if they curl their hair…

2. “I bet it would look really good if you straightened it.”

This is just downright insulting tbh because you’re basically saying it doesn’t look good now and if I completely readjusted the style and quality of my hair THEN it would look good. This isn’t a compliment, it’s just unnecessary, please leave this comment at home. Also, it reaffirms this weird societal idea that curly hair isn’t professional or that it communicates an air of laziness or messiness which is just CRAZY and WRONG. I think my hair would look really good if I kept it the way it is, because it’s me and it’s what I got, and I don’t need you weirdly implying that I should change it :-)

3. “Why can’t you just brush it?”

Ask this question to yourself one more time and really think about why that wouldn’t work. C’mon, use those deductive skills. My goal isn’t to look like a poodle. I’m stuck combing through it ONLY when it’s wet… otherwise, I’d be in for a whirlwind of frizz... oh and another painstakingly tedious three hours. See number 1. Ain’t nobody got time fo dis.

4. “Can I touch it?” *proceeds to touch it without asking*

Listen this sounds strange but this shit happens ALL THE TIME I don’t understand. I’m flattered I guess..? But please keep your grimy frizz-inducing paws outta my curls, please and thank you.

5. “Is it natural?”

Listen, honey, it is 2018, when is the last time someone actually got a perm?!? Sadly, you can’t get 20 different curl patterns with a curling wand. They’re good but they aren’t that good.

6. “How long is it when it’s straight?”

Why does this matter? It’s as long as it is right now. In its natural state. Why are you so concerned with my hair in an alternate form? THIS IS MY HAIR-- THIS IS HOW IT EXISTS. I just don’t understand the infatuation with wanting to rid me of my curls you guys, just let me live with my frizzy fro. THIS IS REAL THIS IS ME.

7. “Do you like it?”

Yes. I do. Though it’d be easier to love and accept it if people didn’t always ask about its straight-hair potential. After a long battle of wanting my hair to be different, I’m finally in a place where I like my crazy head of curls. So please keep your hair ignorance to yourself and I’ll keep embracing the curly lifestyle.

Peace n’ blessings to you and yours. *drops mic*

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
