Deciding to study abroad in Italy was one of the best decisions I have ever made. From the beautiful buildings to the amazing food, this country definitely does not disappoint. Upon reaching the halfway point of my semester in Florence though, I am beginning to miss some things about America.

Here are just a few of the many things you will begin to miss about the states while spending your semester abroad:

1. Good wifi

I never imagined that Wifi would be something I missed. In the states, we are so used to everything loading instantly and having good service wherever we are. The Wifi here is very slow, especially when watching Netflix, so that took some time to get used to.

2. Chick-fil-A

3. Dryers

Not having a dryer in our apartment makes doing laundry a much longer process. It takes about two days for our clothes to fully dry on the racks and even still they are not as fresh looking as in the states.

4. Wawa

5. Starbucks

This past week I was able to get my Starbucks fix while traveling for spring break, but sadly it's not a thing in Florence. The menu here is also more limited, so definitely craving my Strawberry Acai Refresher at the moment.

6. My full closet

With it starting to get warmer in Florence, I need to go shopping soon because most of the clothing I packed was for the winter time. I miss having more options when I get dressed in the mornings.

7. Uber

It's so nice to be able to just press a button on your phone when you need a ride somewhere. Dealing with taxi services, especially when you have limited knowledge of the language, can be very annoying. Also, not being able to pay with your card adds to the struggle.

8. Penn State Creamery Lemonade

9. Proper grocery stores

Gone are the days when I could just take a quick car ride over to Wegmans and stock up on all my favorite food. Don't be surprised if they don't have the snacks you normally get or the brands you are used to. Conad does have Pringles though, so that's a plus.

10. Real bagels

When I saw that this American diner near me had bagels, I was so happy. A bagel in Florence though is basically a slice of bread with way too much cream cheese on it, so that was a disappointment.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
