Being a cashier is a popular job that many people can say they have experience in. From dealing with irritable, hasty and impatient customers, to sometimes actually having an enlightening conversation with a charismatic person — being a cashier is quite an interesting job with many ups and downs. There are many things that people generally learn while working as a cashier.
1. Working under pressure.
To begin with, being a cashier teaches people how to work under pressure. It’s usually easy until you have to deal with a growing line, a ringing phone, focusing on a current order while pointing a different customer to aisle four and then making sure the bag boy doesn’t squish the customer’s groceries. There are a lot of thought processes that occur while being a cashier. Sometimes it may seem menial, but oftentimes you need to be quick on your feet.
2. Developing interpersonal skills.
Secondly, being a cashier helps you develop interpersonal skills. Over the course of your job (depending on how long you continue working), you will encounter a variety of customers. There will be locals, tourists, kids you went to high school with and many more. You will learn how to interact with others and how to handle nasty attitudes in a professional manner.
3. Being a better associate.
Thirdly, being a cashier teaches you to be a better associate overall. Due to developing several skills such as interpersonal skills and working under pressure, people end up handling situations at work in much better ways than if they hadn’t learned those skills.
4. Experience with money.
Being a cashier obviously entails the use of money. Once a person is familiar with how to handle debit, cash and credit transactions, future employers will know that they are familiar with that area, and therefore, it will look great on someone’s resume.
5. Time management.
Finally, being a cashier teaches someone to be better with time management. If you have a shift from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and then a 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. shift the next day, you will realize that you need to be flexible with how your activities go. Sometimes you may need to change things around and other times it really depends on time management.
Overall, it really isn’t all that bad being a cashier. Sure, there are very tiring days but that isn’t the case 24/7. Being a cashier is great for a first-time job because people quickly gain experience due to the several types of situations we encounter on a daily basis.
