Going away to college is a big deal, and it definitely feels like it. It can be overwhelming and stressful. It can also be one of the best experiences, if you let it. Freshman year comes with many aspects: classes, a new campus, living in the dorms, meeting new people, and being thrown into a whole new world. Here are some things I wish I knew before going away to college, combined with some advice I have collected over my first two years as a college student.
Make school a priority.
It can be easy to get caught up in your new freedom, friends and social life. Try to keep up with your classes. College is hard, but worth it. Classes can easily get overwhelming if you slack off, so you need to spend time on it. That being said, make sure to have balance in your life. Having fun is also important, and you can't spend all of your time working.
Be open.
College is an experience unlike any other I've ever experienced. You will meet people from everywhere, each with their own uniqueness. Be open to new people and new experiences. Stepping out of your comfort zone can help you have better and more crucial experiences
Talk to people.
This may seem like a given, but it can be difficult in the moment. Don't be afraid to approach people and put yourself out there. Everyone is in the same boat. Everyone is there looking for a college experience and wanting to make friends. Being nice to people can make a world of difference.
Manage your money.
Late-night food cravings will definitely hit, and can turn into a routine if you let it. Feel free to give into them sometimes. After all, pizza is basically it's own food group. Just know that the money you spend on those late night munchies definitely adds up.
Use the facilities.
You are paying for them. I've been told that a million times, but it is true. This includes places like the gym and rec center, but also places like the libraries and the health centers. These facilities are there for you and to help you. Who knows, you might even end up finding your favorite place on campus.
You will probably make mistakes.
Been there, done that. I can't think of a single person who can say they didn't make some mistakes their freshman year. My advice here is to own it. Accept that everyone makes mistakes, and move on.
Know your limits.
This can apply to a lot of things, and it is so important. Drinking in college is a reality. If you choose to partake, know where you stand. Don't drink more than you can handle. It can have bad consequences, and throwing up all night just isn't worth it. Have fun, but make sure you're being careful, because your safety is the most important thing.
Know your limits in school.
This piece of advice can also apply to your workload. Your health, both mental and physical, is a priority. Don't take on more than you can handle. Move at your own pace, but remember to use this time to grow and challenge yourself.
Know that you will change and that it is okay.
College is a place where you don't only learn in your chosen field. Your experiences can change you and the way you think. Be open to this change. College is meant to help you grow. Often, these changes can be for the better.
My most important piece of advice is to let yourself have college experiences. There is a reason so many people draw on their own college life when giving advice. There is a lot to be learned here, both in and out of the classroom. If you let yourself, you could have four of the best years of your life. You will learn a lot. How much you let yourself get out of this experience is really up to you.
