Nothing is worse than being in the middle of a workout and having someone interrupt you...especially for advice on how to do the workout "correctly."
As a female, this seems to happen a lot, and I think the female population as a whole can agree there are somethings we are tired of hearing while at the gym.
1. "You're only here for cardio."
Uh no I don't do just cardio. I may spend an hour on the elliptical, but after that I spend another half hour to an hour working on strength training. So go take your judgement somewhere else, but remember when that beer belly kicks in cardio is the best way to get rid of it.
2. "You're wearing that to attract the guys."
Actually...no! I am not dressed to make the guys look at my butt or my boobs. In reality leggings are comfortable for working out in, and hey, if I want to wear a sports bra or crop top that's my business.
3. "You look tense..."
Hmmm... maybe because I'm on my last set, and I increased my weight today, but nice try at the pick up line that you had hoped for offering something stress relieving. I'm gonna go back to my workout now, so you can get out of my face.
4. "Is that really an exercise, or are you coming on to me?"
First off, no! I'm at the gym to get a workout, not a one night stand. So yes, it is a workout and I'll just put my headphones on to drown out your stupidity.
5. "You use weights?!"
Because apparently if you are a woman the concept of you actually using weights is beyond most male's comprehension, but yes, a lot of us use them actually.
6. "Do you know what you're doing?"
The worst part of this one is the fact the guy who usually asks this is the one who doesn't know what they're doing. They are the ones that overload their weights so that they wind up slamming them every rep which is a no-no. So instead of focusing on me who is doing my own thing, take a look at the mirror and correct your form.
7. "Do you wanna hangout after the gym?"
I'm gross. I'm sweaty, and I'm tired. This is the worse time you could ask to go on a date. It wouldn't matter if you're an adonis I would most likely still say no. Just let me go home so I can shower.
8. "Do you need a spot?"
Ok at least you're trying to be helpful-I get that, but in this case if I needed a spot and really was worried about my safety I would have someone there. So please let me finish my workout in peace because if I am doing this right, I will be ready to give up enough already.
9. "Are you nervous about getting big?"
The answer is no. I exercise to push my body to it's limits and see a change in my body. I doubt with the workouts I do I will get too big, but I personally don't want that. If a female does want to build their muscles to that point let them, it's their choice.
10. "Oh so you're one of those girls who take selfies, you don't actually workout."
Hmmmm... or maybe I am taking pictures to help show my progress. Or maybe I am between sets and had a snapchat to answer from a friend. No matter why I am taking a selfie I can promise it is none of your business, and I am actually working out (you can tell by the fact I'm sweating like a pig).
11. "Do you need help stretching?"
Alright let's be honest this is another attempt at a pick up line. The answer is no, I don't need your help stretching. If I need a stretching partner, I'll ask my friend who came with me for moral support. Thank you for the offer though.
12. "You're drinking protein?"
Yes, yes I do. This one is a bit more rare to hear, but I've gotten it enough times to put it on this list. Protein shakes are kind of important when you are working on gaining muscle, so leave me and my blender bottle in peace.
13. "I don't like women who are stronger than me."
Well good for you. In the words of most women, "I don't like men who are weaker than me". Seriously though I'm not going to stop improving myself to be more appealing to you.
So overall, stop trying to be a beefcake when talking to girls at the gym. Instead respect us and remember we are there for a workout, not to be eye candy. Keep your opinions to yourself and we can all be friends.
