With the Father’s Day holiday being celebrated people around the world remind themselves of why fathers are so great, and daughter are no exception. A father has a great influence in his daughter’s life, even if they are in subtle ways. Daughters may grow up to be just like their mothers, but fathers have an impact on their daughters lives as well. Each daughter’s relationship with her father is unique but regardless of the relationship, there are five core values that every father should pass on to his daughter.
Hard work:
It should be every father’s responsibility to insure that his daughter isn’t afraid of some tough work. No one escapes life without some hard times and everyone, no matter who you are, needs to be prepared to handle those situations. A father should make sure his daughter isn’t afraid to put in a little elbow grease when to going get tough. He should push her to be one of the best workers possible, if there’s one thing fathers can’t stand, its laziness. As much as daughters hate it at the time, they will most likely be grateful later down the road.
Basic life skills:
Fathers should always make sure that his daughter has basic knowledge of a few key points such as:
- When and how to get an oil change
- How to change a lightbulb
- How to take out the trash
- How to pump gas
- Basic lawn care
- How to cook some burgers
- Anything sports related, ever
- How to fish
- Table manners
- How to parallel park
- How to get rid of a bees' nest
Self-respect:
This value cannot be stressed enough. This is the number one thing daughters learn from their fathers. It may be because her dad sat down and explained to her that real men are gentlemen, and that the boy she may be dating one day had better respect her; if not there is a shotgun in the basement. Or it might be because she has been watching how her father treats her mother. Does he cook meals for her, give her a back-massage after a long day’s work, or bring her flowers just because? Does he treat her with love and respect, or is his love towards her selfish, and degrading? Even fathers having a say on what their daughters wear can help ingrain the importance of self-respect. If a dad’s daughters’ skirt is too short or her top too low, it is just as much a father’s job as a mother's to make sure his daughter walks out the door looking presentable. Daughters are so greatly influenced by how their fathers treat the women in their life, including the daughters themselves, that it is essential that they pass on the importance of self-respect through their actions.
