19 Things Everyone Should Know Before They Turn 19

"The right thing and the easy thing are rarely the same."

About two weeks ago, I celebrated my 19th birthday. Amidst all the fun of reminiscing with my friends and family, I got to thinking about all of the things I've learned over the years. Knowledge passed to me from family, teachers, older friends, and a few things I picked up on my own. Here they are, in no particular order:

Other people's opinions of you don't matter. Do what you want to do, and don't let anyone stop you.

Everyone has their own best interest in mind. Even you.

Giphy

Adults aren't always right just because they're adults. They make mistakes too.

Giphy

But most adults, especially teachers and your parents, have your best interest in mind.

Giphy

You should never pretend to agree with someone just so they'll like you. It's important to have your own opinions and be able to think for yourself.

Giphy

It's also not okay to disagree with someone out of spite. If someone else is right, admit it and move on.

People change. People leave. Even the ones you thought would always be there.

Giphy

Spoiler alert: NO ONE has life all figured out, no matter how they make it seem.

You will probably get your heartbroken, and you will probably break someone else's heart.

People will definitely try to pressure you into doing things, and sometimes you may not even realize it. Be careful.

Giphy

However, just because someone asks nicely doesn't mean you have to do anything you don't want to do. Saying "no" is okay.

Giphy

Some people just aren't meant to be in your life forever, and that's okay.

Giphy

It's important to decide what your beliefs are and why you believe them before you get to college.

Giphy

Spend as much time as you can with your family now, because there will come a day when you don't all live together anymore. I promise you will miss them.

If your goal is to have a relationship like the ones in romance movies, you're always going to be disappointed. Real love takes work.

Giphy

You are not entitled to anything. Sometimes (most times, in fact,) you're going to have to work for what you want.

Giphy

The right thing and the easy thing are rarely the same.

Giphy

Everyone has an opinion, and everyone thinks that their opinion is the only one that is right. Be patient with people, and don't waste your life on petty arguments.

Giphy

And most importantly: Strive for happiness. Don't chase after fame or money if what you're chasing is not something you're passionate about.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
