I love being a college student, and as a senior now, I can proudly say I have had both of those moments where you thought about dropping out or felt like you were on top of the world. Here are a few realities of being in college that many of you have probably experienced:
Needing a nap.
With a packed schedule of studying, keeping up with your social life, working out, eating (lots of it), classes, sports practices, meetings and sorority events, where are you expected to sleep? You know it's bad when you wake up from your average 4 hours and immediately go through your schedule to find a 20 minute hole for a cat-nap.
Procrastinating.
I don't plan to procrastinate, but it becomes unavoidable. Every semester I start out ahead and I tell myself will continue to do it. WRONG. Why do I do it? Because apparently I like to stress myself out and lose my precious sleeping time.
The question everyone asks.
When you come home from your first couple of weeks at college the only conversation topic is, "How is school going?" Unfortunately, people don't stop asking this question for the remainder of your college career. So, your answer starts to become a well-rehearsed, fine-tuned robot response.
Missing home.
Yes, everyone gets a little homesick once in a while, but having friends and activities at school to get you through really helps. Plus, coming home is just that much better when you actually get to.
The reunions are priceless.
When you have your gang at home and your gang at school, you don't want to leave either. Traveling back and forth to visit both can be exhausting, but it's so worth it. It's the long nights of staying up and laughing while you watch scary movies and eat popcorn that keep you going through those tough spots of college. Hold on to those friends for life!
The need to pass on your "wisdom."
Whether it be to a younger member of your sorority, a student from your hometown or your younger sibling, you get an overwhelming sense that you need to give them the ins and outs of college life. Just be careful not to be too protective of them.
Making mistakes.
College is all about making mistakes. If you aren't making mistakes then you aren't doing college right. Never feel bad for making those mistakes; take what happened and grow from it. How you deal with your mistakes defines who you are--be the best you!
Overall, college is a whirlwind of emotions and memories. You will get through the rough times and enjoy those priceless times with friends that you'll talk about when you have grandchildren. Take it from me: cherish every moment of college because it truly flies by.
