When we get to college, it feels like we have life all figured out- for a little while. But, then the reality of the real world sets in and you realize a few things. It's hard to learn how to budget money, and it's hard to keep yourself fed and your room clean and more importantly its hard to be away from your parents. But being a pseudo adult isn't the worst thing in the world, and here's why.
1. You can schedule your time - for what you want to do.
It suddenly becomes clear that you're actually the one in charge of how often you sleep, eat and do everyday things. This also means it becomes cool to do fun things but even cooler to do those things while also being on top of your game. When you don't have to schedule life around 8 hours of school and 2 hours of sports practice a day, you actually have time to get a hobby or something.
2. You develop your own style.
When you're not around the same teenagers all the time you can pick out clothes and idioms that are actually uniquely your own. You can buy a fur coat or a head wrap- it's all up to you and no one is going to judge you for it.
3. Dating is real life.
This may seem crazy, but in high school your first love is fleeting. It's easy to get caught up in all the emotions and fall head over heels. But, as an adult, you suddenly date as your own person. You deal with your own schoolwork or real work and have a person that cares about you and is interested in you- but doesn't consume your life. Plus, its nice to know that in four years its possible to make a life together instead of dreading going away to college.
4. Doing adult things is scary, but actually makes you feel awesome.
The first time I made a professional phone call and didn't want to hide under a rock was such a cool moment. You learn that dealing with other people and staying organized isn't actually so bad. It gets to be routine and doing things like buying Tupperware doesn't seem like a waste.
5. Your parents become your friends.
After leaving for college, our relationships with our parents change. A phone call a day turns from when are you coming home to "what are you up to?" and "tell me all the gossip and I'll tell you mine." You can share clothes with your mom and cook dinner with your dad without it being a learning experience. In all honesty, your parents become your best friend because you realize, they're just like you, and actually pretty dang cool.
