Dogs have a way of getting into your heart like no other animal could. They are some of the most loving, intelligent and adorable animals in the world. I can verify this statement as I have three dogs myself, and leaving them to come back to school is always one of the hardest things to do. You have those big brown eyes staring at you and they know you are going to leave them. They whine and cry for you not to go, and it breaks your heart. When I leave them, I leave part of my support system at home.
Dogs have this strange ability to know exactly what you need. If you come home from a bad day at work or school, they can sense the tension and anxiety. Immediately, they will run up to you, jump and give you big slobbering kisses to melt your heart. They know exactly what you need and when you need it. They look to you for food, safety and love. In return, we look to them for a companionship that will last forever in our memories. They are the emotional support system that so many of us look for. You see all those videos of dogs being reunited with their owners after they have been away in the military. You can just see the love they have for each other with the smiles and tears that come with the reunion.
Looking at videos of women, men and children being guided by their dogs because of disability is an amazing thing. So many people think dogs only rely on you, but in reality so many of us rely on our dogs, too. While walking around campus, you see college students training dogs for multiple things. Whether it is to help the handicapped get through life or help train the dog so it can be adopted with ease, the training doesn’t just give these dogs a new trick, it also gives the helpers a companion they can rely on. These are one of the opportunities that makes you feel good, while also having a great time and giving back.
Dogs are emotional beings. They feel everything we feel and try to make us better when we are down. Dogs come in all different shapes, sizes and have different attitudes, but they are one in the same. The owner reflects the dog and the dog reflects the owner. They work together to better themselves, and in the process make life long memories that are irreplaceable. If you have never had the pleasure of coming home to their smiling faces, I would highly suggest trying it. There are always dogs in need of good homes, and know that when you adopt a dog, you are saving his soul and yours.
