For years I’ve thought that my worth depended on my relationship status. I based my value on whether or not someone had the desire to date me. I wanted my life to be like a romantic comedy. I wanted to be the girl who had flowers left on her doorstep, received cheesy love notes, and had a perfect relationship. Now I want to be the girl who is seen as independent, strong, and perfectly unique. I don't need to be in a relationship. There's nothing wrong with being single.
American society largely promotes the idea of being in a romantic relationship and rejects people who are single. By doing so, society has created the idea that single people are flawed. Due to this fear, people are more willing to settle for a relationship, but often they find themselves unhappy with it. Never settle. Your overall happiness is worth more than your relationship status.
It's scary to brave the world on your own, especially after being in a relationship. However, I can promise you this; if you're unhappy in your relationship it's time to end it. It's going to hurt for a while, but once it ends the world opens up and begins to show you all the beauty you missed while you were miserable. This world was created for you.
Being single is a grand adventure. It's the opportunity for you to go out and see the world through your own eyes. It's the chance for you to fall in love with yourself; forget what everybody has told you to be. You get to decide who you are.
It's taken me a long time to finally come to the realization that being single doesn't mean I'm going to die alone with a herd of cats. It means that I have the opportunity to become who I want. Eventually everything will work itself out.
