There Are So Many Other Things I'd Rather Be Than Gorgeous

I strive to be the best version of myself I can be, not the best looking version.

I have never been known to be the girl boys stop and stare at. Surrounded by the naturally beautiful girls with the fast metabolisms, I’ve always felt left out. I’ve never been seen as the prettiest girl in my group of friends, let alone my class. While they used to capture the attention of every boy in town, I used to look in the mirror and wonder what was wrong with me, why wouldn’t a boy look at me that way? As I’ve matured however, I’ve realized that the prettiest of girls lack in the area of what really matters: character. I can safely say the one thing that makes me stick out is my unnerving character, and at one point down the line a boy will notice that, regardless of the way I look. So if I’m not the most gorgeous girl out there, it’s not too much of a loss, because there are so many other things I’d rather be.

1. Smart.

Before any guy even enters my life seriously, I want to be established educationally. I want to start setting the foundation to my future, but I want to be intelligent beyond the stacks of books inhabiting the corner of my bedroom. I believe that you can learn beyond those leather bound hardcovers. In fact, you can learn more beyond the four corners of a classroom, real life lessons. I want to be someone whose intelligence shines through the words I choose to use, the actions I take, and the way I handle life.

2. Funny.

I'm constantly saying the silliest of things, without caring if I look ridiculous or not. When a friend is down, I try my best to throw a pun or bad pick-up line their way in order to spark a smile upon their faces. I’m the person who can never finish my stories or get to the punch line of a joke because before I finish, I’m already laughing too hard to the point where I cannot breathe, barking out seal noises and clapping like an idiot.

3. Positive.

I strive to always be the ray of sunshine who keeps smiling upon other people’s faces, the one who sees the bright side of things, the one who sees the glass as half full and not half empty. I want to always be able to absorb someone else’s sadness and project my eternal happiness onto them. There’s a bright side to every situation, no matter how bad it seems, and I'm always willing to find it for those who can't.

4. Helpful.

You can count on me to be there to lend a helping hand, for any cause or in any situation with a smile on my face and love in my heart. It's my pleasure, because I know everyone needs a little aid every now and then. I also try my best to be someone that others look up to, but the process leads to me constantly trying to better myself as well. I wish to inspire others to be nobody but themselves, and help people discover their passions and motivate them. I want to fill people’s hearts and souls with the belief that they are somebody. I want everybody to know that they are valued. There isn’t a soul on this Earth who doesn’t deserve the world and I strive to make sure nobody forgets that.

5. Supportive.

I am first in line to buy a ticket to see my best friend perform in a concert, or act in a play. I try my best not to miss anything, and I'm always the one screaming from the stands and sidelines, making shirts bearing their names, and bringing an entire cavalry for support as well. It's always a great feeling to know at least one person is out there in the crowd or audience, just for you.

6. Loyal.

I constantly put my friends and family first. If a guy gets added to the equation, he'll have to accept this commonly known fact. If someone needs me, I'll stop what I'm doing to be there. Loyalty can mean different things to different people but it's more so defined through acts of being there even when sometimes you don't want to be, or maybe listening and following someone just because you know a friend has your best interests at heart. Loyalty is when you expose yourself to being vulnerable in an attempt to help someone you love. Loyalty is when you'll tell the truth instead of telling a lie, and being honest when it seems like the hardest thing to do. Loyalty is when someone will protect you from harm and keep you out of danger or trouble whenever they have the opportunity to do so. There are so many ideas of what a loyal friend should be, but ultimately, a truly loyal friend has your back always and tries their best never to let you down.

7. Considerate.

I have been raised in such a way that I put others before myself, without even thinking about it. I've never been one to leave somebody out, and I try my best to give every person in this world importance. I'm constantly thinking about what I can do to help others. My big heart is both a blessing and a curse, but I can genuinely say that I grew up with kindness embedded in my personality.

8. Giving.

Sincere generosity is another thing that comes as second nature, selfless acts of kindness are portrayed on the daily. My parents have always taught me to donate to charity, and to think about how other people are suffering of poverty and hunger while people waste food; to always take the shirt off your own back if someone else needs it. They've taught me to always give, and serve others before you serve yourself because not everyone is as fortunate as I am.

9. Compassionate.

I’m the type of person who understands how others feel, and I clamor onto those same feelings, in order to convey a sense of empathy. I’ll listen, and I’ll give feedback. If you vent to me about how your heart has recently been broken, I will instantly feel physically that same heart break deep in my chest. If you tell me about how something made you undeniably angry, chances are, I’ll get heated with you. If you’re going through a rough patch, it’ll be like I’m going through one as well. If you cry, I cry. If you come to me with exciting news, I’ll jump up and down with you. When people hurt, I experience that same pain; and I bask in sharing one’s happiness. It’s who I am.

10. Humble.

While I do possess all of these qualities, it's important to remember that staying humble is a virtue, and that cockiness should never encroach on the way that you are. Being overconfident and conceited will soon become a fatal flaw, and will lead to your downfall. So accept compliments, say "Thank you," but never let them affect who you are, and the way you act.

The trait I possess that maintains the most significance is Loving, because even though I am not the most physically appealing, I will love you wholeheartedly with everything I have. One boy in the future will notice that, and will accept all of my flaws, and love me just the way I am. So what if I'm not the most gorgeous girl? It's alright with me; since I strive to be the best version of myself I can be, not the best looking version.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

The Importance Of Being A Good Person

An open letter to the good-hearted people.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
