For years we have watched movies, read books, and bought magazines where women have been shoved into the tiniest pigeon hole. They are either Kim Kardashians- sexy, under educated, dramatic, and branded. Or they are Kate Middletons- refined, smart, modest... a Susie Homemaker, if you will. Or they are Hillary Clintons- aggressive, political, overbearing even. Or a Nicki Minaj- scandalous, minimal clothing, loud and proud of her sisters. But, stay with me, what if women had layers?
I know this may seem like a new concept to many people, but yes, women can have multifaceted personalities. That's right, the girl in your science class with straight A's might be able to rap all of Jay Z's "The Blue Print". That drunk girl at the bar dancing to Beyoncé might be able to decipher the greater works of Shakespeare. For some reason people feel a compulsive need to find the one distinguishing trait and label a female as exactly that. If she's a party girl then that's all she can do. If she's an artist she cannot, dear god no, she cannot be an athlete. If she is politically strong minded than she can't enjoy a night of karaoke at a dive.
All I see are these photos online "there are two types of girls". One will be in a sexy soccer outfit and one will be on men's sweatpants. One will be in a t-shirt and shorts at a party and one will be in a cocktail dress. One will be studying during midterms week and one will be partying. What if we stopped trying so desperately to separate girls into easy-to-understand categories?
Girls are not species that need to be figured out and color coded.
I know loud-proud cheerleaders who won't start a conversation with a stranger at a bar. I know athletes who paint like Van Gough. I know artist who are so right winged that they couldn't go to art school. I know fashionista makeup artists who don't really care what people think of them. I know hippie inspired business women. Girls are not only worth face value. They are layers of life and passion and art and interest. There are not two types of girls. There are not types of girls.
I have tried so hard for years to fit into some category that would please someone. Men? Adults? I'm not sure. But it isn't so easy. I go to an incredibly conservative business school and I am an English major. I walk around with blow dried hair and mascara on everyday but I can debate politics with any man east of the Mississippi. I go out three nights a weekend but I am on Dean's List. I am a middle of Maine, Jeep driving kind of girl but I am a vegetarian.
What I'm saying is stop trying to take the easy way out. Stop trying to turn girls into easy to read, one liners instead of taking the time to actually figure them out. Girls are five feet of contradictions. Our lipstick is controversy and our fingernails are double meanings. We are many personalities and we are many people. There are not two types of girls. I'm about ten types of girls alone.
