If you are like me then you probably share my fears of what the world will be like for the next generation. What kind of social, cultural, political, religious, or economical environment are we leaving behind us? Obviously the entire state of the world is not the fault of the Millennial Generation but we have some serious work to do if this world has any hope of getting better. Unfortunately, our generation is probably one of the most stubborn ones that is still on this earth. We are right about everything, we are passionate, we fight fights that we don't know the whole story on, and we have a strong "us vs. them" mentality.
That's what I want to address today. The idea of "Us vs Them" is so strong in our Western Culture that it permeates every aspect of our social interactions. If you don't believe me let's take a test really quick. Understand that this is not to point out a flaw or to make anyone upset, this is just to show that almost all of us have this issue.
Read this list carefully and completely:
1) Hispanic
2) White
3) Rich
4) African American
5) CEO
Now, when you read that list did you experience a negative emotional reaction to any of the words to any degree? Maybe one of them brought up a bad experience for you that caused an emotional stimulus. If the answer is yes then to some degree you have a prejudice that is somewhere in your mind. This is not necessarily your fault either, in fact a part of it is biological especially if you had a bad experience with someone and now you mind "protects" itself against similar "dangers".
However, this still means that all of us (yes, all) have an "Us vs Them" mindset somewhere in our lives, and boy of boy does it get us into trouble. I mean when you mix Millennial level passion, rash decision making, and prejudice it can cause some issues. Just look at the news, riots, shootings, blockades, and killings have become a part of our daily lives. I'm not saying I know the solution or that any of us can change this on our own, but we can absolutely be the generation that changes this. If for one lifetime all people stood together, the world would see a change it has never seen before since Christ Himself walked among us.
