To be or to not be a millennial.
I am sure I am not the only one that gets's very irritated when people throw around the word "Millennial" with an evil undertone. The stereotype that comes along with this age group of people is very negative as well. It refers to a generation of young adults that think they are entitled to everything. Too lazy to get a good paying job, and not picking useful majors. I will be the first to admit there are people in this generation that are right in line with that stereotype. But just like most classes of people, there are often people who stick out: the outliers. I would refer to myself as one of those "outliers" so I am really offended when I am called a millennial because I don't want that word as a part of my identity.
The true definition of a millennial includes the phrase of a tech-savvy generation. Like it or not, our future is going in the tech direction and we are taking advantage of it and going along with the times. Why be stuck in the past when we can move our society along into the future?
The only problem I have with our generation of millennials is we are based on emotions. To be honest, life isn't fair and we have to learn to deal with it. People our age in the 1940's were going to war willing to die for their country and we complain when we get our feelings hurt. There is something wrong with that picture.
Also, this generation has a very unrealistic version of our world and how it should be. All rainbows and butterflies all of the time. Maybe it just has something to do with my political views but I support a war if need be and guns. But I also support gay rights and the woman's right to choose. This right here is the main reason I refer to myself as an outlier.
But being a Millennial isn't all negative, we have plenty of smart people that have contributed to society. Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of the popular social media networking site Facebook, practically changed the world to this "tech savvy" time period I have mentioned above. Or the U.S. Olympic Women's Soccer Team that has just recently won a gold medal. By doing so they have taught an entirely new generation of women that they can be something more than just the soccer mom, rather the soccer player. A leader rather than a follower. Or my most favorite and a lot of girls cultural favorites Kendall and Kylie Jenner. One is a model and the other a successful business woman all by the ages of 18 and 20. Sure how they came to fame was by their television show but they actually made something of themselves. They are self-supporting modern women that modern millennials should look up to.
The bottom line is that I don't know how I feel about the word millennial and I don't know if I want to be considered one. All I know is I just really wish that people would stop referring to millennials as something of a type of disease gone rampant.
