In recent months, there has been an overwhelming amount of Internet buzz surrounding the not yet released “Peeple” app. Peeple is a controversial app to say the least. Countless articles have roasted the impending app calling it a “Yelp for people” and insinuating that the app is solely a means to cyber bully others. Many believe the app’s intention is to allow users to publicly rate other’s character on a 1 to 5 star scale. However, the CEO of Peeple, Julia Cordray, claims that the rumors about the purpose of the app are simply untrue.

Yes, you do have the ability to rate and review your peers, but she states that the purpose of Peeple is to promote positivity, not to bash others online. What many previous commentators did not realize is that the controversial app is now “100 percent opt in.” Essentially, no one can review you without your permission and if you choose to create a profile with the application you can preview any “reviews” or comments made about you and choose to either accept or reject them! You will be able to control what the public can see.

Despite the clarifications made regarding the app and its functions, many still feel unsettled by the possibility of a Peeple app launching in the near future. The creators of the app may have had the best intentions, but the truth of the matter is that people can be cruel. Regardless of whether or not a user can reject the reviews others have posted about them, they are still subject to emotional harm and seemingly inevitable cyber bullying.

I am eager to see the public's reaction to the Peeple app when it finally goes live. Will it resonate as a platform for positivity as the creators have so passionately claimed?
