Donald Trump, the man behind the hit reality television show "The Apprentice," and multibillionaire, is now not only running for president, but is actually being taken seriously. If I were to have just woken up from a coma to news such as that, I think there’s a tremendous chance that I might voluntarily return to being a vegetable.
I agree with the notion that we are in desperate need of political change, particularly when it comes to scumbag politicians and legislative corruption, but is electing the “You’re Fired”-guy really what this country needs? I can appreciate his candidness and honesty towards issues which most other politicians find themselves tiptoeing around, but sometimes it’s more like listening to a kid fresh out of junior high with all the self-righteousness to go along with his pompous arrogance.
It’s absurd enough to have the head of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Jim Inhofe, think that his ability to hold a snowball is in anyway reflective of a lack of climate change, but to now have a climate change denier being offered up as a candidate for the presidency? First of all, a sweeping majority of scientists agree that climate change is not only real, but also a pressing issue that needs to be addressed. Not only is it gigantically moronic to deny climate change, it’s borderline insane.
While I recognize that certain legislation is necessary when it comes to immigration and the regulation thereof, we must first and foremost remind ourselves that we are in fact a nation of immigrants. A nation of immigrants who slaughtered, relocated, and terrorized the inhabitants of these Americas into submission or total annihilation. To everyone who has ever said "You're in America, speak English god dammit!" let's take a moment to think about that shall we? We're in America, a nation now separate from England, speaking English─how is that any different from someone in America speaking Spanish, German, or Polish for all intents and purposes. You're not just wrong as far as political correctness goes, you're wrong in your very understanding of what it is you're trying to push down someone else's throat; or in this case, pull out of someone else's throat.
The GOP by and large acts as the embodiment of ignorance in this country, but that’s not to say that the Democrats are without their flaws because that’s almost just as laughable a statement. When I was a freshman at Fairfield University, I had a professor literally laugh in my face when I mentioned the introduction of a serious third party into the incredibly stagnant two-party system we find ourselves in. I mean, come on, people, the presidency isn’t a damn popularity contest─this is the leader of the free world were electing, and you want Trump? I’m going to go ahead and say that if he even comes close to becoming elected, I will promptly be moving across the Atlantic as soon as possible.
It’s bad enough that we as a nation have the attention span of 6-year-olds, but to then witness and experience a world in which political campaigns involve name-calling, finger-pointing, and attacks on appearances? The truth is, we're not just getting dumber, we're doing so voluntarily. Somethings for me are certain: that Congress is a joke, the presidency and the power thereof is becoming more and more of an illusion than it already is, and this country is not just going to hell, it’s already there.
