We live in a society that tells us that we aren’t capable enough to choose what happens to our bodies, that we aren’t smart enough to break the glass ceiling, and that we should not speak unless we are spoken to. We are told to “bring it down”, because “you don’t want to seem too strong, or even worse: bossy.” We tell our daughters to hide themselves, don’t show too much skin, and don’t be out too late. Why? Because we are scared that they may be hurt or violated because they are female. As women we are constantly forced into shrinking ourselves, constantly being told what to do, how to act, and what to say. I am tired, and I’m sure you are too. This year we should change the narrative that sounds us. This year we need to be authentic and break the standards that have been created for us. Let this be the year that we show the world how powerful we are!
1. Let’s start making books about “Queendoms”
Growing up, I loved reading books about princesses. I would get lost in the tale where the handsome prince would come save the princess, and then be crowned the hero. He would then marry the princess as some sort of prize for winning a game. These types of books are fun and all, but we need to change it up. Let’s have stories where girls are the hero. Let them lead the way, and save the guy for once! We also need to show the diversity of girls! We are not limited to dresses and tiaras; some of us like sports, science and so many other great things! We need the little girls to grow up knowing that they can help themselves, that they are strong beyond measure, and their beauty is not the only thing they have going for them! Girls can be anything they want to be!
2. Focus on being strong rather than pretty
As women, we all go through periods where we feel inadequate. We try to fulfill beauty standards that are often at times unrealistic, and even unhealthy. This year, instead of putting all of your energy on the way the outside looks let's focus on the inside. Take time to breathe, look into the mirror and learn how to love and accept your flaws, exercise not because you want to look like a model, but to feel good about yourself. Eat for the experience, for nutrition, and for making your taste buds happy! And most importantly pay attention to your mental health. When we focus our energy on our inner beauty our outer beauty begins to radiate effortlessly!
3. Don’t wait for someone else to make you happy
Relationships are great. It’s nice having someone there to experience life with, make you laugh, and just to love wholeheartedly. However, remember that you are an individual first. Figure out what makes you smile, find a hobby that you are genuinely interested in, and learn how to spend time with yourself. There’s nothing better than knowing who you are, and what you want when you’re in a relationship.
4. Take the plunge
Don’t ever be afraid of failing! Everyone has a goal that they want to accomplish that may seem too big or too scary. This is your year to try. Make a plan, set mini tasks for yourself, and believe that you can do it. If you’re unhappy with your major, then change it! If you think you deserve to make more money then let your boss know, or even better open your own business! Don’t ever remain silent when you know that you deserve more! Know that you are smart and resourceful. Your future is in your hands.
5. Never stop learning
The more you know the more you can help yourself! Read a book, take a class or simply engage in a conversation with someone who is different from you! Never stop stimulating your mind, it’s the one thing that cannot be taken away from you!
6. Support each other
This is the most important of them all! When we help others in need, we are not only giving that woman hope, but we are also strengthening the sisterhood. Instead of making everything a competition, let’s empower and instill confidence in each other. We need to stand together in order to make our voices be heard. When a powerful woman reaches out her hand to another woman who does not know her power beautiful things can happen!
Let’s fight back from ourselves, our society, and anyone/ thing that wants to get in our way! Let’s make this a nasty, bold and unapologetic year!!
