The motto, "uncommon success," implies that DePauw students excel in and out of the classroom.
We take school seriously, but we also know how to have fun. Here are some fun things to do before graduation – when you're not studying of course!
Honor the tradition of a Boulder Run.
Whether in celebration of the first snow, or in shame after
losing a drinking game, every student should experience the adrenaline rush of
a Boulder Run. For added exhilaration, make sure to run (or walk) past the
Public Safety van. Remember, the Boulder Run does not count unless you’re
completely naked.
Enjoy a GCB.
While most people have been to Marvin’s at least once, I
still know a few people who have never tried the infamous Garlic
Cheeseburger. The overload of garlic may not be everyone’s taste, but it never
hurts to try! Don't forget the Macbites or Ranch Fries!
Participate in Little
5 activities.
Riding in the Little 5 bike race is a huge commitment, but more
low-key events are also offered throughout the week leading up to the big
event.
Study off-campus.
DePauw offers an abundance of study abroad opportunities.
Whether you want to travel for winter term, May term or a full semester, there are plenty
of options. For those students who would rather stay in the States, DePauw
offers a number of domestic trips, as well.
Take a “Marvin’s
Delivers to…” picture.
While off campus, you’ll probably be missing your favorite
late night meal at Marvin’s. Fantasize about enjoying a GCB in an exotic
location by making a “Marvin’s Delivers to…” sign. Your picture may even get
posted in the restaurant!
Spend time at Prindle.
Even though The Janet Prindle Institute of Ethics is one of
the most beautiful places on campus, many students don’t take full advantage of
the complex. The Prindle offers many relaxing study spaces and hosts free
events throughout the year. You can even be a student intern there! Also, consider a yoga class at the Bartlett Reflection Center.
Explore the Nature Park.
DePauw’s very own Nature Park provides students with over 500 acres to run, bike, swim, grill out and even camp. Grab a couple of friends and spend a day outdoors!
Attend Monon at
Wabash.
It may be more convenient to attend home Monon games, but a
trip to Crawfordsville can be just as fun. Hitch a ride with a group of friends
or take advantage of university transportation.
Road trip to the Exotic
Feline Rescue Center.
Located just 45 minutes away from campus in Center Point,
the EFRC is a hidden treasure. The sanctuary provides a permanent home for
formerly abused or abandoned animals. Everyday admission is just $10 for a tour
of the grounds. The EFRC also offers overnight stays and other special events.
Stargaze at McKim Observatory.
Many
students are unaware of DePauw’s very own astronomy observatory. Listed on the National
Register of Historic Places, the McKim observatory hosts multiple open houses
and tours throughout the year.
Climb to the top of East College Bell Tower. The Bell Tower has been locked for a while, but a select few know how to break in. East College is DePauw's trademark building, as well as the oldest, and there is no better way to say goodbye to DePauw then to see it from the top of the Bell Tower.
Visit every frat.
While we all have our favorite places to party, it’s always
fun to mix it up by visiting other houses. Just because your boyfriend is in ATO doesn’t
mean you can’t join your friends for a party at Sigma Chi every once in awhile.
Who knows, you might even find a new favorite spot.
Rent a community bike. All you need is your student ID and you can rent a bike free of charge from the Inn! Now, you can bike to the Campus Farm, around the Nature Park or to Dairy Castle!
Adventure to Cataract
Falls.
Head over to Cloverdale for a great view of two different
waterfalls and a covered bridge. Entrance to the recreation area is free of charge and
includes a playground, picnic areas and hiking trails.
Get spooked at the
Edna Collins Covered Bridge.
Possibly the most popular bridge in covered bridge country, the ghost of Edna Collins is rumored to haunt this spot. Supposedly,
the little girl enjoyed swimming in the stream below the bridge. At night, her
parents would drive onto the bridge, turn off the motor, and honk three times
to tell Edna to come home. But one day she never returned. I dare you to honk for Edna and see if she comes.
