Do you want to vote and don't know if you're registered? Is this your first election? Does the whole process of voting by absentee ballot seem really exhausting and daunting? Are you completely lost when it comes to the political process?

Use this as a non-partisan guide to get the information you need to go out and vote this November!

Registering to Vote

If you haven't registered to vote yet, you should do so as soon as possible. Most states require you to submit your voter registration forms at least a month month prior to the election date. There are some states that are experimenting with same-day voter registration. This is where unregistered voters can show up to the polls on election day, and register to vote & submit their ballots that same day. You can find out if your state is one of those here. Most college campuses also run voter registration events, where they can help you register to vote, even if you live out of state. If your college won't be having a registration event before the deadlines for your state, here are a few websites that can help you register to vote without much hassle.

Voting in Person

If you live close to home and can vote in person, or will be traveling back home for election day, be sure you know where your polling place is! Check the voter ID laws for your state, and be sure to bring the required documentation with you, if it's necessary for you to vote. Check your voting status prior to showing up at your polling station: if there are any issues listed, be sure to get those resolved before election day!

If your voting district allows for early voting, take advantage of the opportunity! The polls will be much less crowded compared to election day, and you will be less stressed.

You can check the voter ID laws and required documentation for your state, as well as your personal voting status here.

Voting by Absentee Ballot

If you're like me, you won't be able to travel home to vote in person this November. In that case you will need to request an absentee ballot. An absentee ballot is where your state election office will send you a packet including a ballot, and instructions for returning your ballot once it is completed. When voting via absentee ballot, you will need to have witnesses (two people of voting age) with you while you fill it out. This is just a precaution to help prevent voter fraud. Once completed, all you have to do is mail your ballot back in the return envelope provided for you by your state.

The process of requesting an absentee is actually fairly simple. There are several websites that will help you request an absentee ballot from your home state.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
