4 Types Of 'I Miss You' Texts We've All Gotten

I bet most of you have received at least one “I miss you” text from somebody. Perhaps an old friend or an ex. Maybe you received this text randomly on a Tuesday afternoon, or during the weekend at 2 in the morning. No matter the time of day, or the circumstances, I think these texts are pathetic. Here’s a breakdown of the types of “I miss you” texts I recently received and you probably have, too.

1. Drunk and Disorderly

This might be the most common and most unwanted form of an “I miss you” text. Hopefully when this text comes through you are soberer than the one that sent the message. That way you’ll have the upper hand. These texts usually roll in on the weekends around 1 in the morning. Don’t believe what the alcohol is making them say, because in the morning nothing will have changed.

2. I Regret It All

This type of “I miss you” text is probably the most confusing. For example, I started receiving late-night Facebook messages from a long time college friend. He starts words vomiting his feelings.

I miss you. I miss us.

There was never an us.

We should have hung out more before you left.

Well New York is fabulous, and how is your girlfriend btw?

I feel like I made a mistake.

Yeah, which is telling me all of this.

I understand that regretting something is an awful feeling, but sometimes expressing it to someone is just way too much of an information overload. They should save it for their shrink, not their ex.

3. The Hidden Message

Another dreadful way the message is received is when it is an encrypted message. Hidden messages are fun if you’re a child doing a scavenger hunt, but not when you're 22 and get confusing messages from your ex.

We should grab drinks sometime!

No.

How are you? And how is the family?

It’s been three years and now you suddenly care?

I remember when we used to...

Yeah and I remember you breaking up with me, too.

4. Well, That Was Random

I find texts always come through when you’re busy. It never happens when I can process the fact that someone who is now a stranger to me is saying he misses me. One example is when I was on a first date with this guy I had a huge crush on, and we were having a great time. I checked my phone at one point and guess what I saw. My ex-boyfriend from 4 months earlier texted me. Asking how I’ve been then hitting me with the dreadful words “I miss you.” This text couldn't come through the night before when I was sitting home watching Sex and the City, or even an hour before I left my house to go on this date? It had to be while I was hitting it off with the guy that replaced him?

“The universe may not always play fair, but at least it's got a hell of a sense of humor.” -Candace Bushnell

No matter the wording or app the messages comes through, the three little words “I miss you” are never fun to hear. I have yet to experience something positive happening after getting a text like that. A rule I set for myself is to never say it back if I don't truly mean it. If for some reason you do truly miss that person, then actually go do something to change that.

You do you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
