Racism: there is more to it.

As you have seen in the media, or maybe even viewed right in your own backyard, racism is a prominent issue throughout the United States. You have all seen the #blacklivesmatter hashtag, although a more significant movement, primarily the #alllivesmatter hashtag deserves a second look. This hashtag focuses on the masses all being severely significant in keeping the United States actually "United". Clearly, racism is a significant issue and it needs to be stopped, but what you may not know is racism isn't exclusively to African Americans. Every culture experiences some form of this segregation. I am in no way justifying racism in any form, simply bringing it to your attention that racism is not limited to African Americans.

The most evident form of racism in the media lately has been involving cops shooting or being severely harsher towards black people. In reality cop brutality and racism are two completely separate and extremely differing issues. When an African American is killed due to a cops error, the media and the masses spiral into an outrage and it's deemed that all cops are "evil" and "racist". In contrast to this when a white person is killed by a cop it's simply murder and doesn't deserve any sort of extra attention or social movement. Murder is murder, no matter what color of skin they possess and it is most definitely not a racist act only when it occurs to someone of color.

People are afraid of what is different from them and what they are used to and that is the seed from which racism derives. If a black person moved into a white neighborhood, they may experience racism and in such a diverse society especially, this is not okay. On the other side of this matter if a white person moved into a black neighborhood they may experience judgement and racism and this isn't okay either.

Similar to this if an African American man wearing wearing a shirt that read "proud to be black" you would only assume that he is proud of his culture. Opposite of this if a white man wore a shirt that read "Proud to be white" he would be seen as racist and rude. Why is there a double standard? The reality is every culture experiences racism throughout the United States.

Every life matters and there should not be racism and such crude double standards in our great nation. We all need to make an effort to support one another and be all together. So rather than picking up a gun and mass firing at the people only out to protect us, we need to educate ourselves further on this matter. Racism is found everywhere and rather than turning to violent acts we as the United States need to "Unite" to end racist slander because #alllivesmatter.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
