The truth about women in sports media is that they face a lot of sexism. Everything about women in the sports world is completely degrading. Women are seen as less than a man already in the working world so when you add sports to the mix it makes it even worse.
Men never believe that women actually can enjoy sports without:
1. Trying to impress them.
2. Only being in it for the men.
3. Not knowing what is going on.
News flash, women are allowed to like football and other sports just as a man without some strange underlying motive. I grew up around football and I went to several football games as a baby due to my father playing for West Virgina University. Whenever I was three, I moved to Texas aka a place where football is treated like a religion. I have always been extremely passionate about football and it damn sure is not because of any man.
Another thing is, all of the women sideline reporters are absolutely beautiful. Why? Because they attract male viewers and are more appealing to athletes.
For example:
1. Kaylee Hartung: ESPN SEC Network (Now CNN)
2. Samantha Ponder: ESPN College Gameday (Now Sunday night NFL Countdown)
3. Erin Andrews: FOX NFL Sideline Reporter
All of the above women are incredibly breathtaking so it makes total sense why they would be on the sidelines rather than sitting in the press box doing radio and/or commenting. Because the truth is, they don't really care about their play-by-play opinion.
Not to mention, all three of the above women have been subject to sexist acts and articles.
1. Kaylee Hartung
When you Google Kaylee Hartung, the fifth article you see is titled "ESPN Hottie Kaylee Hartung, Not Married Yet!, Busy in Her Profession: Boyfriend and Dating?" I'm pretty sure her job title isn't "ESPN Hottie" but ok. The article is all about her dating life and what she wants in a man while occasionally speaking about her accomplishments as a reporter. Articles like this are never written about male commentators. If you google Max Kellerman who is also on ESPN, all that comes up is his interview and show highlights but nothing about his love life. What is the difference?
2. Samantha Ponder
Samantha is a momma of two little ones and often has her oldest, Scout, on set with her. According to an interview Ponder gave, she spoke on how many people have taken it upon themselves to question her parenting skills by taking her child so many places. Samantha also received a lot of appearance backlash while pregnant with her second child, True.
If this doesn't prove that appearance is key in this field, I do not know what does. She could not even rock her baby bump without being degraded. Also, as a college game day host, she has seen plenty of crazy game day signs. They usually say hilarious things about the other team, however, someone decided to make a sexist sign at Sam that had NOTHING to do with the game.Once again, just another example of how women are seen in a very degrading way in the sports world.
3. Erin Andrews
Erin Andrews is arguably the most well-known sports reporter. She has been FOX's NFL sideline reporter since 2012 and has made a big name for herself. However, in 2008, Erin Andrews was a victim of stalking in a Nashville Marriott where the hotel owner and operator willingly allowed her stalker to film nude videos of her through a peephole in the privacy of her room. Andrews became publically humiliated due to the video being uploaded to the internet immediately and gave an emotional testimony on the stand about the incident.
These three women are only a few example because the truth is, it goes on and on. Former Fox sideline reporter Pam Oliver (who was replaced by Andrews) even said that the business is very demographics oriented. She also was told by an executive that Fox Sports would be looking a lot different and she could not help but notice that all of the new on-air people have been "young, blonde, and hot."
Truth is, women in sports are seen as a sex symbol and are picked apart more than a bad call. They want women to be hot and know sports but do not actually believe that she knows what she is talking about. Women have to work 10 times as hard as any man to prove they know what they are talking about only to be critiqued for her appearance. Women cannot look too conservative, but cannot be too revealing. Women also have to make sure they are skinny and able to walk in heels. It is the exact sexism women face on daily basis but get even more for being in a "man's field."
